IIM Sambalpur

Update on August 22, 2015: IIM Indore has made a tentative web page for IIM Sambalpur.

Update on June 24, 2015: The Indian Cabinet has finalized Sambalpur as one of the 6 new IIMs. On other fronts: (i) the state government has proposed the center to upgrade VSSUT Burla to an IIEST and there are pronouncements by a central minister that the central government is positively inclined, and (ii) the upgradation of GM College to an university is progressing well (its new web page is functional and advertisement for admission to GM University has come out).

Update on March 2, 2015: With center inclined to relax some of the conditions on IIM locations that it apparently had suggested earlier, the state government has now recommended Sambalpur as the location for IIM. Sambalpur is the second largest knowledge hub of Odisha with 3 existing state universities and two new ones in works. The existing universities in Sambalpur are: Sambalpur University, Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology, Veer Surandra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences. The two new planned ones are the upgradation of GM College to a unitary university and an Open University.

Old message:

Odisha government planning for its own Open School System along the lines of NIOS

Following is from a report in ibnlive.com.

The State Government is planning to start open schools in all the districts very soon to enable over-aged dropouts complete their schooling.

The initiative is being taken under the Orissa State Open School (OSOS) which proposes to set up the open schools on the lines of the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). Students getting themselves enrolled at the open school could either opt for a personal contact programme or a distance education programme to get quality education. For the junior classes, the school would impart education in essential subjects, including arithmetic, reading and writing, alongside pre-vocational training to help them get employment in case they are unable to continue their education. These schools will also offer dozens of new courses so that students can opt for the professional skills best suited to their regional markets.

“The idea has been mooted with an aim of drawing school dropouts back to classrooms by providing them an organised system of education outside of formal schooling,” said School and Mass Education Minister Pratap Jena while speaking to this paper.

He said talks are on with the higher authorities of NIOS to formulate the courses and schooling designs and the Department is expecting to start the open schools during the ongoing academic year. “The open schools are expected to draw a large number of dropouts in the State who want to complete their schooling. The duration of the courses for classes V, VII and X would be of six months each. The detailed modalities for the functioning of these schools are being worked out,” the Minister said. He added that extra care will be taken to ensure that quality of education in such schools is not compromised. The schools would function through a number of study centres which would be established in different districts.

Several other state governments have launched the open-school system to provide educational facilities to over-aged school dropouts to complete their education.

The website of the NIOS is http://nos.org/. Currently one of its 16 regional offices is in Bhubaneswar. Its contact details is:

BPUT plan diagrams for its main campus (139 acres) in Rourkela and its 10 acre campus in Bhubaneswar

The following is obtained from http://skdas.org/. Thanks to a posting in rourkelacity.com for the pointer.

The 139 acres BPUT Rourkela campus is structured along a pedestrian spine, punctuated by a central court with administrative offices, a central library, and a student complex. Secondary courts occur at the entrance to the various faculty buildings.

The BPUT Bhubaneswar mini-campus is a 10 acres site (5 acres in phase 1) that includes exam evaluation center, JEE building, counseling and admissions center, job placement center, and guest houses.

Regional Plant Resources Center Bhubaneswar advertises for 13 Scientist positions (to be paid at UGC scale)

Its web page is http://www.rprcbbsr.com/. Following is from its web page.

Regional Plant Resource Centre was established in 1985 as a recreational garden and with an aim to provide a green lung for the inhabitants of Bhubaneswar – the capital city of Orissa. Gradually it became a dynamic and vibrant research organization of the State Government with a focus on the conservation of plant biodiversity. Over the year, it has made significant contributions in the field of ex situ and in situ conservation and assessment of genetic diversity of various groups of plants and its related aspects. With strengthening of scientific manpower and laboratory facilities, it expanded its areas of research which witnessed large outputs in terms of analysis of genetic assessment of plant groups through cyto-taxonomic and molecular techniques.

Following is its organizational set up.

Following is its recent ad. for 13 principal scientist, senior scientist and scientist positions.

Mathematics faculty in institutes and universities in the Bhubaneswar area

Earlier we reported on the shortage of Math Ph.D’s in India. Slowly the Bhubaneswar area is emerging as a center for Mathematics starting from mentoring at the high school level (at IMA) to pursuing Ph.D at NISER, IIT, Utkal and Ravenshaw. There is also a good chance that one of the proposed 10 science magnet high schools will be established in this area. (The top Math center in India is Chennai which has IIT Madras, Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Chennai Mathematical Institute.)
