Mahanadi Coal Fields Limited agrees to set up a medical college in Talcher

April 25th, 2008

Following is an excerpt from a news report in Pioneer.

Coming under a sustained pressure from the State Government, the Mahanadi Coalfield Ltd (MCL) has reportedly agreed to set up a Medical College at Talcher. A decision to this effect was taken at a high-level joint meeting between the Coal India Limited (CIL) Chairman Partha S Bhattacharjee and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at the State Secretariat on Thursday.

During the meeting, Patnaik placed a proposal before the Coal India Chairman to convert the existing 100 bedded hospital at Talcher to a 400-bedded hospital and to make it a full-fledged Medical College. Bhattacharjee promptly agreed to Patnaik’s proposal, sources said.

… Mahanadi Coalfields Limited CMD SR Upadhayay, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Bijay Kumar Patnaik and Secretary, Energy, Suresh Chandra Mohapatra were present at the meeting.

Earlier, in https://www.orissalinks.com/?p=168, we had argued that the govt. should indeed do this and wrote about how Bokaro Steel Plant has agreed to set up an engineering college and a medical college in Jharkhand and Central coal fields agreeing to set up an engineering college in Jharkhand.

The Orissa government should put similar pressure on NALCO, SAIL-RSP, CIL, NTPC, etc.

This will be wonderful. Similar efforts should be made to have medical colleges at Baripada, Balasore and Koraput.

Various Corporate houses spend huge money for setting up Hospital and Medical College as part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Programs. The recent announcement of Chairman of Coal India Ltd. to consider the request of Chief Minister of Orissa for converting the existing 100 Beds to 400 Beds Hospital and setting up a Medical College at Talcher is nothing but an effort to fulfill its social obligations, it ows to the neaby areas, where it has its own business operation. Any suggestion may primarily be focussed on this direction. Though, it is not always true, if we see setting up Intenational University by Vendanta at Puri, where it has no business operation. Similar is the case of TATA, which has set up a number of Educational & Medicl institutions in Mumbai. Further, the other major Public sector is Nalco, which has its plants at Anugul and Mines at Damanjodi of Koraput district. The Medical College proposed to be set up by Coal India at Talcher will certainly take care of the interest of nearby areas including Anugul. Thus, Nalco may be pursued to set up Hospital and Medical College either at Damanjodi or any suitable nearby place. Similarly, NTPC may consider to set up such Hospital and Medical College at Jarsuguda, where it is planning to put up a mega Power Plant. RSP, Rourkela may also be impressed upon for converting its general Hospital to a full fledged one and take appropiate steps for setting up Medical College there. Orissa Govt. should take appropriate steps, when SAIL will take over Neelachal Ispat Nigam Ltd from IPICOL & MMTC.

Majo Private Players , who are entering to the Steel sector like Posco and Mittal may be impressed upon subsequently to set up Hospital and Medical College in their respective districts viz. Jagatsinghpur & Keonjhar. This can be pursued, when these Plants starts constuction of their project. As we are aware, a large number of Steel Projects are being set up/ conceived at Dubri, notebly TATA Steel & Mesco. These companies should come forward to set up Hospital & Medical College either at Dubri or nearby ares. or areas like Baripada/Balasoe. Small Steel Comapnies may be pursued for setting up Engineering College or any professional institutions any where in Orissa as per their choice. Since setting up Engineering College will not entail much financial implication compared to setting up Medial College, the above suggestions would be workable. Rgds -KCDAS
