Orissa government looking for 1000 acres for IIT Bhubaneswar

June 3rd, 2008

Following is an excerpt from a report in Pioneer.

The State Government has identified five places for setting up the proposed IIT. The places are Banki, Jatni, Khurda, Naraj and Nandankanan. While the Centre has decided to set up the IIT in an area of 500 acre of land, the State Government has decided to give 1,000 acre of land for the purpose.

The work for land identification has begun. However, the Centre has asked the State Government to adhere to some rules and regulations while selecting the sites for the purposed IIT. As per the condition, the site must be close to the railway station and airport. The institution should be well connected so that the students would not face any trouble while commuting to attend classes.

However, for the time being the proposed IIT earmarked for the State will operate under the Kharagpur IIT. 120 seats would be reserved for the students.

The state government is wise to look for 1000 acres instead of the 500 acres that the center stipulates. This will allow IIT Bhubaneswar to have sufficient room for future growth.

I think we are now getting too much obsessed with engineering education. Medical education is not in particularly good shape. Whereas the need for this is much more than it used to be. The IITs have of course made us aware of the need for quality education in engineering. Unfortunately, not many medical colleges of comparable standings are around. The biggest problem with medical education is that it can only build up around a good hospital. Most of good hospitals have now become pure business model. Earlier we used to have good hospitals mostly run by charitable trust, where business not the only criterion. So, existing good medical colleges were built around those hospitals. But this not possible any longer, unless we carefully reprogram our approach to medical education. I don’t have a model solution, but something must be evolved for it.

Apart from medical colleges, it is important to have research centres both in medical sciences and engineering. Research and developing facilities can promote science. I think medical institutions should do some research work like clinical studies as well ..

The State Government should declare one University for Medical Sciences at Bhubaneswar to manage the ever growing private medical colleges in the state.

We are very proud that the IIT at Bhubaneswar is coming up. The State Govt. should only as much land as is required. It should not be, under any situation , be allowed to be a branch of IIT, Khadagpur. I suggest the State Govt. should allot land of about 500 acres around Jatni.

All of us, we Odias are very happy about the IIT coming up at Bhubanesawr. It should not be allowed as an extention of IIT, Khadagpur. The State Govt. should allot only 500 acres of land i.e. as much is required and not more as was done earlier in case of RRL etc. Now, we should try for an IIM. Dont we deserve and need it.
