Dharitri: The minister had spoken the truth

May 10th, 2007

Dharitri reports that the minister answering the no call motion had said that upon the advice of the scientific advisory committee an IIT is to be established in “Orissa”, but then she corrected herself and said “Bihar”. More interstingly, she also said that Minister Fatmi never said that an IIT will be established in Orissa. However, Minister Mr. Fatmi was in the Lok Sabha at that time and he was silent even when the Orissa MPs were looking at him for an answer.

They say that Saraswati sits on your mouth. :).. I think truth will prevail.

Just a thought though, Can we have a PIL to question the allocation of an IIT and extended campus in BBSR ?

This report says the level of reporting and basically for the low level thinking of reporter to impose on Oriya people. Now, we donot live in the era of “SATYA JUGA” where one spelled means its granted and not followed then will be hanged.

Now a days everything is valid if it is done in a proper way and by pen & paper and not just by a saying in some meeting. MPs should figure out a proper way to deal the situation for a positive result rather than for a news.

Centre is not allowing a single IIT and what was the reason to ask for Burla to be an IIT ? Mps donot understand how to concentrate on a single topic and dilute the matter by asking many.

Using the IIEST report and other data, Ashes had done a thorough comparison between UCE Burla and the five engg colleges that were selected to be upgraded for IIESTs. UCE Burla
came close in almost all aspects except two very important aspects, the faculty size and the annual funding. I give the table borrowed from Ashes’s document below. That is why I believe it is very important that the Orissa govt (with the help of Orissa based comapnies) does its part in bringing up UCE close to the level of the other five (BESU, CUSAT, IT-BHU, AndhraU
EnggCollege, Osmania U engg college) asap. That would significantly increase the chances of UCE becoming an IIEST.

Regular faculty (2000-2005) (Contract and ad-hoc faculty excluded)

    Institution Total Nos With PhD
    IT-BHU 229 170
    UCET-OU 127 57
    BESU 212 136
    UCE-AU 123 68
    CUSAT 206 151
    UCE-Burla 62 (sanctioned 98) 36

Thats why I wrote my suggestions on UCE Burla at http://www.orissawatch.org/?p=23
