The standards of higher tehnical education in India are already very poor. The addition of second shifts will lead to a further erosion of the already low quality of education.

More on this is discussed in my blog at

I would sound a bit cynical in arguing against the decision. Most colleges don't have competent faculty. It appears that instead of being a standard setting body AICTE has become a standard demolishing body. Knowledge Commission recommended scrapping AICTE. Unfortunately, MHRD is not listening. If AICTE feels facilities in private colleges are lying idle, it should first understand that facility can not be used without facilitators.

Of course, there is a need to increase the seats in engineering colleges, but it can not be at the cost of quality. Even the MHRD's decision to open 8 IITs at one go is an absolutely myopic, Quality has been sacrificed for just 5 years of political gains of a small set of old people. I am afraid after graduating with an engineering degree perhaps students will be forced to take up a clerk's position in banks, govt offices.
