Recently we received two national level (in real sense) institutes, which are IIT-BBSR and NISER. Good!! I don’t understand why the directors are non-Oriya? Of course I understand this is not in our hand but it hurts!!

A non-Oriya director of NISER / IIT-BBSR is going to make the institute a lower quality one. An example one can compare at this point of time NISER and other IISERs.

I remember there was a list of Oriya academicians and now it implies where they stand in national level competition. Good luck!

Congratulations to Prof. Chakrabarti on his appointment as founding Director of IIT Bhubaneswar. Since IIT- BBSR is being mentored by IIT – Kgp, this would lead to desired synergy.

  • 3. Prof.Biswajit Mishra  |  January 30th, 2009 at 7:49 am

Debu Babu’s comment of non-oriya Directors for IIT-BBSR ans NISER is unfortunate and oncalled for. We must understand that IITs are Institutes of national importance and are global concepts. In such scheme of things, how come we talk about whether the Director is from Orissa or not. Before posting such comments one must also realize the fact that this link is not only visted by the guys from Orissa. I draw a simili between such observation and the MHRD’s drive of quota for faculty recritment in IITs and IIMs, which at least for this time, is stopped. Who says that the academicians from Orissa are not doing well. But academics and administrations are completely different concepts. By the way, the present Director of IIT-KGP (read: the oldest and the lasrgest IIT), is from Orissa.

  • 4. Dr. Sukanta Dey  |  January 30th, 2009 at 12:11 pm

Prof. Mishra’s observation on Debu’s comment cannot be more appropriate. There is no scope of any regionalism in such national institutes. At the starting point itself we should not encourage any feeling based on language, religion, caste, sex, politics etc. Otherwise such institutes will move towards mediocrity rather than excellence. People like Debu should understand that it is not an institute for or by Orissa only but for the whole country. It should be named as IIT, Bhubaneshwar, not IIT, Orissa (similarly for other new IITs, IISERs etc.). It is more appropriate to have Directors of such institutes from outside the state to avoid any bias in things like faculty recruitment, administration etc.

I fully support Prof Mishra’s remarks about the appointment of IIT-Bhuabaneswar Dir. I think we msut understand that these are (IIT,IIM) International level Institutions and only competant imcumbant can rise to the top. Then Just imagine how come Dr. D. Acharya is holding the post of a Director in IIT-Kharagpur. I think Debu babus remarks is not jusitified and oncalled for

I entirely agree with Dr. Dey and Prof. Mishra’s observations. Narrow , parochial, blinkered mindset should not be encouraged where appointments to National level institutes like IITs and IIMs are concerned. Merit and only Merit should count.

I would like to come in support for Debu Babu for only one reason that may be bringing in an Oriya Director or more importantly a person who is conversant with the language and the culture may help. The person may not be Oriya by birth or caste but has gained some understanding of the place and people.

The Director of IIT has to be a bold administrator and should not be a person who would give in to the local pressures of politics and social situations. He should do what is right and must be done for the best interest of the institute. An outside state person may significantly be limited in that perspective. Just my two cents thoughts.

No doubt, Debu’s comment was unfortunate and uncalled for, at least in this forum. But Sudipto has a point. Even if we agree to Sudipto’s views, Prof. Madhusudan Chakraborty is best suited for the post. I have interacted with him and was really impressed by his dedication for the institute and love for this part of the country.

I am classmate of Prof(Dr) Madhusudan Chakraborty from IIIT KGP – department of Metallurgical Engg. and have known him from 1966. More than an academician, he is one of the finest human being I have known. He is dedicated.practical and absolute workalocohlic. Since our college days, I have known in to be really broad minded and international in his outlook – jsut what the institute will need. I have seen some comments by Mr. Debu – other than saying it was unfortunate because I have close friends and colleagues in Induatry who are from Orrissa but so humane and broad minded that it is a pleasure to be with them. I wish Dr Madhu and IIT Bhubhneswar all the best

Prof. Madhusudan Chakravarty is not doing anything to improve teaching facilities on campus. Recently, some of the students have been calling for faculty from outside to be hired on contract basis to teach us useful subjects, and there were some excellent people we attended classes from, but they were turned away by him. They had degrees from top univs like Stanford and Berkeley and he told them that our curriculum is better than theirs! What is the point of having a Director who does not even understand what academic needs students have, or the honesty to see where things need to be improved? xxx Editor: Last sentence about a regional stereotype edited out xxx

From the student vantage point it may appear that way. But with the media scrutiny the IITs face, the Director rightly has to be very careful in such matters. One guest faculty doing something strange would bring disrepute to the IIT and the director. Every day there is something about IITs in the news.

I have met Prof(Dr) Madhusudan Chakraborty from IIIT KGP in Singapore in 2006 and 2008 during Pan-IIT conference. He was one of the invited speakers at our PAN-IIT conference.
Singapore has couple of world class universities and campuses as well with state of art labs and Departments and buildings and one of them was NUS. In 2009 – I have received a call Prof. Chakraborty while he took his new responsibilities as Director of IIT -Bhubaneswar.
He told me Biswajit, I would like to see this IIT Bhubaneswar can have an world class infrastructure starting from building, campus, labs, libraries, sports complex etc.
So he requested me to find out those best architecture and construction companies from Singapore. In fact I tried to help him and he mentioned that there will be some tender etc.

I was amazed with his vision about IIT – Bhubaneswar and I told him sir we will try our best to provide you all the useful information.

In recent time while I was talking to him to that few MNC investment Banks wants to visit some of our IITs campus recruitment. First thing he mentioned is that IIT Bhubaneswar needs to be included in that visit of those MNC Companies.

I am really proud of Prof. Chakraborty and I have seen him as a student too while I studied in KGP. He is a world class administrator too.
I am shocked to see some of the posting. Please, don’t take it at regional level(Debu, Anant).
IIT system has it’s own process which has been developed over the year of best practices and followed by countrywide.
I request all students to support his vision and hardwork to IIT Bhubaneswar a world class university.
