More IITs and IIMs — beyond the ones listed in the March 28 2008 announcement — in the offing?

June 2nd, 2009

On March 28th 2008 eight new IIT and seven new IIM locations were declared. The IITs were to be located in Bihar, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Orissa, Punjab, Indore (Madhya Pradesh) and Gujarat. The IIMs were to be located in Tamil Nadu, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh (Raipur), Uttarakhand and Haryana. At that time one of the deciding principles was that no state would have both a new IIT and a new IIM.

Since then establishment of a new IIT in Karnataka is often mentioned and because of a typo in the speech of Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, a new IIM will most likely be established in Rajasthan. Following is an excerpt from a recent news item about an IIT in Karnataka.

Union Minister for Law and Justice M. Veerappa Moily on Sunday said that an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) would be established at Muddenahalli on the outskirts of Chickaballapur. Addressing a meeting of Congress workers here, Mr. Moily, who represents Chickaballapur in the Lok Sabha, said that he had discussed the matter with Union Human Resources Development Minister Kapil Sibal. Steps would be taken soon to set up an IIT at Muddenahalli, he said. During his election campaign, Mr. Moily had promised that he would strive to get an IIT established at Muddenahalli, the birthplace of the legendary engineer Sir M. Visvesvaraya.

Following is an excerpt from a report about the IIM in Rajasthan.

What seemed to be a typographical error made by the HRD Ministry in Budget papers has turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Rajasthan, as Rajasthan will now get a new Indian Institute of Management (IIM) for the error.

In light of these Orissa should continue to vigorously push for an IIM.

    Sir,

The Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad is a premier educational institute in the fields of Mining and allied branches which is one of its kinds in Asia and is at present bracketed with IITs (viz. IITs, IISc and ISM). This institute has similar faculty requirements and pay scales as that in IITs and has its admission of students through IIT Joint entrance examinations.
This institute which can be considred as a jewel in the crown of Jharkhand state is now being planned to be downgraded to lower category by pulling it out of IIT Joint Entrance system
    and IIT Club.
Almost all the states have been planned to be given an IIt by the Central Govt. Even much smaller states of Uttarakhand and Himachal prades have each got an IIT but in Jharkhand instead of having an IIT the IIT grade institute i.e. ISM Dhanbad is being down graded.
It will not be out of context to mention that BHU-IT which was in a lower category than ISM and which joined the IITJEE much after the ISM has already been announced to be converted into an IIT thus UP now is having two IITs – at Kanpur and now at Varanasi: if one considers undivided up before Uttarakhand came into existence there are now 3 IITs including IIT Roorkee, but in Jharkhand instead of having an IIT, another IIT grade institute (ISM Dhanbad) is being downgraded by Union Ministry of HRD.
The conversion of ISM into an IIT will cost the centre at the most about 30% of the cost of a new IIT.
We are writing to you to save this institute and kindly persuade the Central Govt for its conversion into IIT, something which was verbally agreed earlier when a new IIT was sought for Jharkhand by the then Education Minister of Jharkhand.

A request letter to Shri Kapil Sibal , Hon. Union Minister, MHRD, for the conversion of ISM Dhanbad to IIT with the reasons for doing the same has already been sent by us.
    -Dr. P. P. Bahuguna, President
    ISM DHANBAD TEACHERS ASSOCIATION,
    ISM DHANBAD

    Dr. P. P. Bahugna,
You are the President of ISM Dhanbad Teacher’s Association which I believe is a prestigious post but its sad to know that you have few VERY wrong informations. Let me clarify them:

    1. You stated that IT-BHU joined JEE much after ISM but let me inform you that IT-BHU has been a part of JEE ever since IT-BHU was born n 1972 by merging of erstwhile BENCO (Benares Engineering College), TECHNO and MINMET while ISM joined JEE as late as 1997.

    2. You have written that IT-BHU is far below ISM in standards as compared to ISM but let me bring to your knowledge that ISM stands nowhere in front of IT-BHU. Before conversion of University of Roorkee to IIT-Roorkee, no one ever gave preference to Roorkee over BHU, ISM is too far to talk of.

I dont want to comment whether ISM deserves to be an IIT or not. Its an excellent institute for sure but its totally unfair to presents wrong facts to prove your point.
