July 10th, 2009

Following is from a PIB report.

Rajya Sabha

The Government approved the proposal in 2006 for setting up of six AIIMS-like institutions in the first phase of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).

The Design-DPR Consultants selected for preparation of designs and the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) have submitted the DPRs for medical college and hospital complex. Project Consultants have also been appointed at all sites and work is expected to start in September, 2009 and get completed by the end of 2011.

The availability of faculty/medical staff is key to efficient running of these institutions. The work of construction of residential complexes has, therefore, been taken up on priority work has started at all 6 Sites and will be completed at all sites by the end of 2010.

In addition, it has also been decided to set up two more new AIIMS-like institutions, one each in West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh in the second phase of PMSSY.

The Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi must be a candidate for AIIMS status and not AIIMS like institution as it caters a large population of densly populated eastern Uttar Pradesh, Western Bihar and Jharkhand as well as adjoining Chattisgarh.

As this institution is caters services to millions one time 120 crore aid to tis teaching hospital will not serve the purpose.

Therefore I request Minister of Health & Family Welfare Mr Azad to visit the institution, assess the need of the patients; and then to make a decision.

Varanasi is most important city in eastern U.P. It has historical, cultural, important. This city has population of over 10 lacs.Though there is B,H.U.but it not sufficient medical facilities. To cater the requirement there should be one more medical college because people has to run Delhi or Lucknow to meet their medical requirements. Therefore I request Government to establish one AIIMS in ancient city Varanasi.to provide medical facilities in eastern U.P.,Bihar etc.

As varanasi is very densely populated city in eastern UP and having more than population of thirty lacs, hence there should be one AIIMS like institution to cater requirement of medical facilities of people. It may also fulfil requirement of medical facilities of near by States.West UP alongwith Lucknow & Kanpur having private medical institution, but no man is going to invest in medical college in eastern UP.Therfore Government has to consider this and accordingly one AIIMS to be opened in Varanasi poitively. Therefore I request Government for this.

The city has grown (in population) double in last 10 years but if we look at basic infrastructure – medical facilities, prefessional colleges, roads etc it is still the same or even gone worse. The city needs overhaul in all the aspects but most imprartat thing is medical facilities. Ceraily city needs more govd funded medical institutes. Hope minister would look at this ancient pride and do something to make it better.
I live outside of India, recently I heard about some construction on east side of BHU. Does anyone know if it is for some medical facility
