Bhubaneswar: The Centre has yet again proposed the state government to identify one of the universities of the state to be accorded with Central University status.
A letter from the Union HRD ministry to the state government has assured that the Centre would provide cent percent financial assistance for converting any one of the state universities into a Central University.
It may be mentioned here that the then NDA government had proposed the state government to accord central university status to any one of the state universities to which the state government had recommended Sambalpur University.
However, protesting against the decision of the state government, there was a massive students’ agitation in protest against the former for not selecting the Utkal University as it is the oldest university in the state.
Though the state government had stuck to its decision, the present UPA government had however, summarily rejected the proposal of the state government following a letter by the Union HRD minister Arjun Singh who made it clear that there is no proposal by the Centre to accord central university status to any university due to financial constraints.
But after three years, the Centre, in a sudden volte face has sent a proposal to this effect to the state government.
Meanwhile, the state higher education department, that has received the recent letter from the HRD ministry, is reviewing its consideration it had taken earlier.
Sources in the official circles however, said that the state government is in a fix to recommend the name of the university to obtain central varsity status.
