The new NIDs will be in Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Madhya Pradesh and a location in Northern India?

November 16th, 2009

Following is an excerpt from a report in Business Standrad.

The national design policy had recommended setting up institutes on the lines of NID in various parts of India to promote design programmes. Under this initiative, the government has narrowed down on Andhra Pradesh, Assam and Madhya Pradesh for setting up the new NIDs in the next two to three years. Cities like Hyderabad, Jorhat, Bhopal and Gwalior are some of the cities that have been shortlisted. An NID will also be set up in the Northern part of India for which target cities are yet to be finalised.

Interested state governments have offered around 30-50 acres of land for setting up the institute. Each NID will gradually have an intake of 1000 students. The national design policy had stated that public-private partnership mode could be an option for setting up these new institutes but sources say that no call has been made by the government for private partners as of now.

At present NID has campuses in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Bangalore. The institute runs 8 programmes in the Ahmedabad campus, 5 in Gandhinagar and 3 in the Bangalore campus. The Bangalore campus is the institute’s R&D campus where there are 30 students for the three programmes.

Some possible lessons to learn from this:

    1. The state government should have promoted a different location for this.

My appeal to the CM: Please promote other locations in Orissa for any new national level institutes.

    2. Various mails to PM, HRDM etc. highlighting Bhubaneswar has been given this and that surely affects Bhubaneswar’s chances, but it also affects Orissa’s chances, as the center can use that as an excuse.

When the state government does not listen, writing to the central level makes sense; but one needs to think about what is written and how it may impact and whether one’s actions (often unknowingly) is like …

My appeal to the people: Write to the state authorities whatever you want but when writing to the central level write about the location that you want and make the best case but be extremely cautious in putting other locations in the state in bad light as the results, as in this case, could be that the “thing” does not come to the state at all.

Orissa government should put all its weight behind getting the National Institute of Design (NID) at Berhampur. If cities like Gwalior and Jorhat can convince the Central government, so can Berhampur in Orissa. I hope the state government will take all issues in to consideration besides the desire of the masses and make a strong demand for NID at Berhampur.

I believe ex-MP /Central minister Mr.Chandra Sekhar Sahu & CMO should talk to central government as this has been announced earlier for the location Berhampur. Also chain of mails are need to be sent to the respective Central Minister,PM,Congress President towards fulfillment of NID in Odisha.

if NID is not coming to orissa , can we push for a Design department in IIT bhubaneswar ? what is more important is to have a design foot print in the state which has so much to offer for the discipline. design department in IIT is a very successful model already established in the form of IDC@IITB, DOD@IITG, IDDC@IITD, DP@IITK & CMPD@IISC. So any push in this regard?
