Orissa government asks committee to take a second look at the medical college fees

July 18th, 2007

Fearing public anger  the Orissa government has asked the committee that recommended a 4.5 lakh/year fees for private medical colleges to take a second look at that. Following are excerpts from Pioneer’s report on this.

Drawing flak from student bodies as well as the public, the State Government on Tuesday appealed to the Fee Structure Committee (FSC) to reconsider its decision on the hike of admission fees particularly in the medical stream.

A student has to pay at least Rs 4.5 lakh per annum as against last year’s Rs 2.2 lakh to get into a medical college. In this connection, Industry Minister Biswa Bhusan Harichandan called a high-level meeting of officials on Tuesday. Secretary, Industry also attended the meeting.

It may be noted that the FSC headed by a retired justice had stipulated the annual fee for the 4-year MBBS degree at Rs 4.5 lakh. Orissa has 750 MBBS seats.

The State Government is of the opinion that if it sticks to this fee structure recommended by the Committee, a public resentment would certainly sweep the entire State.

"It is the Government which will face the public anger," said a senior official on the condition of anonymity, adding that if required, the Government may ignore the recommendations of the Panel for the greater interest of the student community.

However, the Government has not yet decided whether it would appeal to the Committee about reconsidering the decision on the admission to the engineering and other streams like MBA.

    Sir,
the medical fees has increased to the skyhigh for orissa people. It is very sad to say that the state govt. is not understanding the feelings of meritorious students.Because of the fee hike one of the deserving candidate in front of me is unable to study medical.I hope Mr.NaveenPattnaik will take steps to reduce the fees on or before engineering council so that
that candidate would wait for August 9/10 counselling.

    respctd sir,
orissa is considered as one of the poorest states. ironically, our govt. has fixed a course fee of rs.4.5 lakhs/yr, which is the highest ever fees structure in india. the best medical colleges in india have their fees fixed at rs.3.5 lakh/yr. for example, manipal university, an internationally reputed versity charges a nominal fees of rs.16 lakhs for a 4.5 yrs mbbs course.
it has got 313 mbbs seats, for which approx. 1500 rank holders are called for counselling,i.e, 5 times the total no. of seats.
where as in our state, for 750 mbbs and 380 bds seats, rank holders upto 1504 have been called for counselling, which is abyssmally low.
according to sources, atleast 3 times the seat matrix,i.e (750+380=1130)*3=3390 rank holders must be allowed to attend the counselling in 1st round and rest of the seats lying vacant after the 1st round must be filled up in the 2nd or 3rd rounds.
to my knowledge, there is no provision for a 2nd round by the ojee committee.
RULES ARE MADE TO FOLLOW ,NOT TO BE BROKEN..
if the govt. has formulated rules, then it’s govt.’s duty to abide by the same……
