While this is good news I am sure there is much more that other mining companies in the state can do.
While we are patting our back on this piece of news, we are unable to get our act together in the case of the Vedanta University. As per the latest issue of Businessworld, the university will take a decision on moving to either Andhra Pradesh or Tamil Nadu. ( http://www.businessworld.in/bw/2010_07_24_The_Learning_Curve.html ). This situation is totally deplorable.
I think the time has come for some of you academics to take matters into your hands and ensure that the university remains in the state. I am not sure about the influence you gentlemen have, but it would be something definitely worth trying for.
In another related development, ArcelorMittal has decided to go slow on its project in Orissa. The company has given Rs 600 crores to the government of Karnataka and intends to begin operations in that state.
These developments in my opinion are going to affect the image of Orissa as a state that is progressive and on the move. A couple of more failures and we could be clubbed with West Bengal as a state that is not investor friendly.
It is urgent that we show successes however little they may be.
