Business India on Centurion School of Management in Parlakhemundi

November 13th, 2010

The article starts as follows:

The Harvard-educated home minister P. Chidambaram could learn some valuable lessons at this campus located in the heart of the Naxalinfested tribal district of Gajapati in Orissa, bordering Andhra Pradesh. Centurion School of Rural Enterprise Management (csrem) is run by two management professors – Mukthi Mishra and D.N. Rao – who quit their jobs at Xavier Institute of Management Bhubaneswar (ximb) to set up their own B-school barely seven years ago. They have made a tremendous impact in this poor and restive region. “Over the past few years, we have managed to produce over 10,000 graduates in engineering and management, and vocational certificate holders in a range of trades from the region,” says Mishra, co-founder of csrem.

While IIT and IIM professors are shouting for salary hike , this intitiative is truly a cut above the rest, Its not about money, its about working towards what you passionately believe will make a difference. Good luck to promoters.

Two tribal districts of South Orissa Gajapati and Rayagada, which are often found at the bottom in socio-economic indicators have benefited a lot from the Pvt educational Institutes. It would have taken decades for these places to get Govt funded Institutes or Universities and thanks to the initiative of the local investors in the education sector these places proudly find their names in the technical education map of Orissa. Students of these places have good Institutes in their own locality and are much better off than before to avail it. But, unfortunately very little is being done to improve the connectivity in these places. A train to Paralakhemudi and Gunupur connecting major cities of Orissa is still not in sight. Similarly, the Gunupur-Therubali stretch is yet to get a green signal, coz apathetic state administration. This is in the interest of Orissa to ensure faster development in these districts which come under the hunger zone. The Centurian Univ has come as a big hope nodoubt.
