Odisha plans to fund the education of bright poor SC/ST students in top private schools of the state

Update: As per another report in tathya.in the Odisha ST & SC development department plans to also support SC and ST students joining Sainik School. Another great move by the department and its visionary secretary Ashok Tripathy.

Following is an excerpt from a report in Pioneer.

… The Department of ST & SC Development has set in motion a pioneering proposal to help out the bright students of the ST and SC categories.

… it is proposed to select at least 100 students from the ST and SC communities strictly on merit to reimburse their entire expenditures for studying in the best schools of the State from Classes-I to XII, said an official.

There are a number of residential schools of international standard in the State. Leading the list are Sai International, KIIT International, DPS, Phulnakhara, DPS, Damanjodi, DPS, Angul, DAV Public School at Unit VIII, Bhubaneswar.

… The students selected for admission will be provided tool kits and proper baggage so that they will not feel inferior to their affluent classmates. They will be provided to-and-fro journey expenses from the schools to their native places during holidays.

 It should be noted that the RTE bill and its draft rules requires something similar. But kudos are due to the Odisha SC & ST department and its secretary Ashok Tripathy for taking proactive steps and having it implemented early in Odisha.

12 KVPY from Orissa

Following is from a report in the Statesman.

Twelve students of the state including five from DAV Public School, Chandrasekharpur, Bhubaneswar have been selected for the Kishore Vaigyanik Protshana Yojana (KVPY) scholarship. A total of 198 students from across the country have qualified this year.

The students who qualified for the scholarship from DAV Public School, Chandrasekharpur, are ~ Mr Pinaki Prasun Kumar, Mr Biplab Rana, Mr P Dinesh, Mr Rohit Gupta and Mr Smarak Mohanty.

Students of BJB College of Bhubaneswar who qualified for the scholarship are Mr Animesh Swain, Mr Aish Mohapatra and mr Saswat Panigrahi.

Mr Himalaya Senapati of Bhadrak College, Ms Pallabi Mishra from Cuttack Siddharth Senapati and Mr Ajaya Kumar Jena of Balasore have successfully qualified for the scholarship.

The scholarship programme, which is initiated by the Department of Science and Technology, government of India, aims to identify and select students who demonstrate talent and aptitude and encourage and assist them in pursuing research careers. It does so by the means of a two-tire examination.

The successful students will be provided with generous fellowship up to pre-PhD level. In addition, summer programmes in prestigious research and educational institutions in the country will also be organised for them.

Central School of Tibetans in Chandragiri

Among the 28 central schools for Tibetans, one of them is in Chandragiri of Gajapati district, Orissa. Following is information about that school from this page.

CST Chandragiri is located in the Eastern Ghat region at the height of 1900 feet above sea level, about 250 kilometres away from Bhubaneswar, the capital city of the state of Orissa. The school was established in Phuntsokling Tibetan Settlement in the year 1965 with the blessing of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and managed by Central Tibetan Schools Administration, Delhi, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India. The school was established to impart modern education and to preserve and promote the rich Tibetan cultural heritage to the children of Tibetan refugees settled in Orissa.

At present the school has two primary school branches, one at Lobersing Camp No. 3 and another at Mahendragarh Camp No. 5 each with a headmaster. The main secondary school at Chandragiri has classes from VI to X. The school has a total strength of 345 students including both the branch schools. Tibetan is the medium of instruction at the primary classes and English in middle and secondary classes. The school is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Delhi and follows textbooks published by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and CBSE. The total staff strength is 32, which includes 23 teaching staff. The academic performance of the school continues to show improvement and the result of Class X CBSE Board examination held in March 2004 was 92.31% as against 52.77% last year.

The school has good facilities viz. spacious playgrounds, multi-purpose halls, computer lab, senior & junior science labs, audio-visuals, resource centre, library, OHP, art and tailoring sections. The Settlement Officer and Parent-Teacher Association take active interest in the development of the school.

DAV Chandrasekharpur students do well

Following is an excerpt from a report in Pioneer.

… students of Chandrasekharpur DAV Public School have shown remarkable excellence and brought glory to the school and also to the State. The State’s topper of Standard XII CBSE examination, Soumyashant Nayak, snatched the All India topper position in the examination conducted by Indian Statistical Institute. He has the credit of being the first student from the State to get such honour. This year, 23 students from the country and three from the State have qualified for the same. Ten students of the school, who have qualified in the IIT examination, are Aditya Acharya, Sovam Nayak, KV Suddodhan, Soumyashant Nayak, Sanjay Nanda, Ranjan Bhuyan, Sumeet Dandapat, Pankaj More, Padmaja Thatoi and Sonali Patnaik. Keeping pace with the tough competitions, 11 students of the school have placed themselves in the top 100 students of the State in the AIEEE-2008.

St. Xavier’s schools across Orissa

St. Xavier’s high school group has established and is currently establishing many schools across Orissa and neighboring states. As per http://www.stxavierschools.org/aboutgroup.htm they have schools in Berhampur, Bhanjanagar, Cuttack, Balangir, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Balasore, Rayagada, Jajpur Rd and Keonjhar. They are establishing schools in Cuttack-Bhubaneswar and Sunabeda. The Cuttack school is affiliated to CBSE board. The affiliation of the other schools is not clear.

CBSE updates class X Oriya syllabus

The New Indian Express reports that the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has updated the Oriya syllabus for the class X examination. The CBSE has been updating the Oriya syllabus for the past few years and the results are very encouraging. Oriya is now more popular among the students. Following is an excerpt from the news report.

The revision comes at a time when there has been a renewed interest among the students for the subject, thanks to the Board’s move to engage local experts to frame the syllabus and relax the content.

In fact, the 2006 and 2007 passouts got a feel of the transformation. And the result was encouraging.

‘Most secured marks that were on a par with marks fetched by students in Hindi and Sanskrit,’ said a teacher of a DAV Public School here.

The changes also benefited students of Class XII. Experts said the move helped the pupil bring the languages closer to heart and understand its richness.

Important Information at a Glance
1.	Please read the instructions and proceed carefully before you start filling the application form.
2.	Examintion Fees

3.	Application can be submitted Online during 16.10.2007 (10:00 AM) to 26.11.2007 (05:00 PM)
4.	After successful submission of On-line Application Form, an Application Number along with confirmation page will be generated.
5.	Candidates are advised to take printout of confirmation page and paste his/her two recent photographs (as given in point 6 below), sign in the specified box and send this confirmation page along with Demand Draft by Registered/Speed Post  to "The Deputy Secretary (AIPMT Unit), Central Board of Secondary Education, Shiksha Kendra, 2, Comunity Centre, Preet Vihar, Delhi 110 301" for further processing so as to reach on or before 28.11.2007. Application received after the last date will not be accepted.
6.	Photograph : Firmly affix two recent good quality color passport size photograph (taken on or after 1.9.2007) with gum/fevicol (not to be pinned or stapled) in the space provided for it in the Application Form, one duly attested by the Principal/Head of the institution/Gazatted Officer. Before affixing the photograph, candidate must write down his/her Name and Application Number on the back of the both the photographs with ball point pen only. The photograph must indicate clearly the name of the candidate along with the date of taking the photograph. Photographs should be without cap or goggles. Spectacles are allowed. Polaroid photos are not acceptable. The photograph of the candidate should be attested by the Principal/Head of the Institution or Gazetted Officer in such a way that part of the signature is on the photograph and remaining part of the signature is on the application form. Attestation should be done on the bottom part of the photograph so that the photograph is not defaced. Candidates not complying with these instructions or with unclear photograph are liable to be rejected. Candidates may keep 6-8 identical photographs in reserve for use at the time of entrance examination/Counselling/Admission.
7.	Before the dispatch of the application form, kindly insure that the form is complete in all respect.
8.	Candidates submitting applications online are required  to attach Demand Draft of required fee (In favour of “Secretary CBSE Delhi”, payable at Delhi). to mention his/her Application No., Name, and Address on the back of the Demand Draft to retain a photocopy of confirmation page for future reference. to retain a photocopy of the Demand Draft sent. to retain the original receipt issued by the post office for having dispatch the Application Form The processing of applications will begin only after receiving confirmation page and Demand Draft.
8.	Eligibility and Qualifications:  He/She has completed age of 17 years at the time of admission or will complete the age on or before 31st December of the year of his/her admission to the 1st year MBBS/Dental Course and is an INDIAN NATIONAL. The upper age limit for All India Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Entrance Examination is 25 years as on 31st December of the year of the entrance examination. Further provided that this upper age limit shall be relaxed by a period of 5 (five) years for the candidates of Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes/Other Backward Classes. The number of attempts which a candidate can avail at All India Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Entrance Examination shall be limited to Three (03) uniformly for all the candidates. The candidate must have passed in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English individually and must have obtained a minimum of 50% marks taken together in Physics, Chemistry and Biology at the qualifying examination. In respect of the candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes/Other Backward Classes the marks obtained in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taking together in qualifying examination be 40% instead of 50% for General candidates. Those who are taking plus two examination in 2008 can also appear for the entrance test provisionally subject to their fulfilling the canditions later.

More on the upcoming Sai International School

Following are excerpts from a New Indian Express report.

… SAI International School, the first corporate- style institute of the State. Every classroom will be equipped with computers with broadband connectivity and big display units. Specially crafted education management software will give parents an opportunity to monitor the progress of their wards through the Internet. All in all think of the Eton College and you get all its good attributes here. The school is being set up by the JSS Group close to Infocity here.

Classes will commence next academic session, from creche to class VII. It would be extended up to class XII later. The school will follow CBSE curriculum, however, with a blend of both US and British syllabuses. Renowned UK-based LaurelsGlobal institute will be closely collaborating with SAI International School on the academic front.

Sources said, the school has forged an understanding with well-known institutions of similar stature across the country for seamless migration of students.

Incorporation of best of the international curriculum would also help students coming from abroad integrate with the courses here with ease. But the school will not have residential facilities.
