Allahabad bank educational loan
I came across this Allahbad bank site about education loans. They give loans up to 4 lakhs without any collateral security to students of a selected list of colleges/institutes. The current list includes four Orissa institutes. They are:
- AMITY Bhubaneshwar
- XIM Bhubneswhwar
- Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT)
- NIT Rourkela

KIIT to have a law school that will also offer five year integrated B.X+LLB programs
KIIT has started a law school that will offer five year integrated law school programs. Following are excerpts from Kalinga Times’ report on this.
"KIIT National Law School (KNLS) fills up the absence of a national law school in Orissa and will meet the surging demand for legal professionals in the wake of globalisation and rapid expansion of corporate sector and influx of multinationals in the country," according to an official release issued by the University.
N. L. Mitra, a renowned law academician, has consented to be involved with KNLS as its chief advisor, giving a boost to its mission to be at par with the best law schools.
Mitra has been instrumental in setting up almost all reputed national law schools in the country. He is former Director of National Law School of India University, Bangalore and former Vice-Chancellor of National Law School, Jodhpur.
KNLS is offering five year integrated law programmes (B.A.LL.B; B.Sc. LLB; and BBA.LL.B) as well as three Year LL.B course from the current academic year. …
The School is headed by Faizan Mustafa, who is former Dean and Registrar of Law School, Aligarh Muslim University.

KIIT to follow OJEE counselling schedule for MBBS and BDS programmes
Pioneer reported on this. It says
Counselling for admission into MBBS and BDS programmes of KIIT University will take place as per the schedule of the Orissa JEE, according to a University release. The university is offering these two academic programmes from the current academic session after getting the nod of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Earlier, the Medical Council of India and the Dental Council of India had recommended the commencement of MBBS and BDS programmes at KIIT.

NAAC accredition of Orissa colleges and Universities
NAAC, the National Accredition and Assessment Council, an autonomous body established by UGC now does periodic assessment of colleges, universities and even specific programs. We analyze the NAAC ratings of Orissa colleges and universities below.
Among the 149 colleges of Orissa it has rated only 6 have secured an A rating. (None have an A+ rating.) They are:

KIIT plans an autism center at KIMS
Pragativadi reports that the KIIT foundation plans to establish an autism center at KIMS (Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences). Following are some excerpts from that report.
The workshop was inaugurated by Prof Nalini Menon, head of Rainbow Centre for Autism, Bangalore.
In his opening address, chancellor of KIIT University, Dr Achyut Samant said that KIMS would soon have a modern centre for treatment and research on autism to be set up under able guidance of Menon.
Stating that a majority of the patients from Orissa have to go to Bangalore for the treatment of this disorder, Dr Samant said that the proposed autism centre at KIMS would be immensely beneficial for the patients as we as researchers in the field.
Addressing the workshop, Prof Menon said that Autism is not localised in India but prevalent in all parts of the world.
In his speech, Dr Kailash Chandra Panda, former principal of the Regional Institute of Education, said that autism is a pervasive developmental neurological disorder, which is detectable from age of three onwards in affected children.
The proposed autism center at KIMS would be the first of its kind in the state, he informed.

Orissa engineering colleges in Outlook India ranking

June 11 edition of Outllook has rankings of engineering colleges, medical colleges, and some specialty colleges. Only two Orissa colleges appear in those rankings. In the ranking of govt. engineering colleges NIT Rourkela appears at number 28 with a total score of 1437. In the ranking of private engineering colleges KIIT Bhubaneswar appears at 37 with a total score of 1073. If one were to combine both rankings then NIT Rourkela would be 32 as four private coleges have a higher score than NIT Rourkela. In the 2006 Outlook ranking of top 100 engineering colleges NIT Rourkela was 34 and KIIT was ranked 100. So NIT Rourkela improved by two positions. To figure out if KIIT improved its ranking one has to count how many private colleges were there in the 2006 top 100 ranking. A quick count, which may be slightly inaccurate as it is not easy to identify all private colleges in a list, shows that in 2006 KIIT was 50 among the private colleges; so it seems to have improved its ranking by 13 positions.

KIIT has approval for 100 Medical (MBBS) and 100 Dentistry (BDS) seats.
Earlier we had mentioned a running headline regarding KIMS (the medical college of KIIT university) getting MCI approval for starting MBBS. But until now there was no proper news report on it. Today Kalinga Times reports that indeed KIIT has received approval from the Ministry of Health and Family Affairs (on recommendations by the MCI and the Dental Council) for 100 Medical (MBBS) and 100 Dentistry (BDS) seats. KIMS now has a new web page.

Ranking of Orissa Engineering Colleges based on student preferences

During the last two years I ranked various engineering colleges in Orissa based on the student preferences during BPUT’s counselling. In the following I will list the top 10 for 2006 and 2005. However, I must stress that proper rankings can only be done by using several parameters: student preference, opinions of companies, faculty quality, facilities etc. So my ranking based on only one criteria is flawed. But thats all the data that I have handy. So don’t take this ranking as gospel. Please use other channels to get more information on various colleges, such as their web pages.

TCS recruits 1100 students from Orissa engineering colleges
Enconomic times and Financial Express report that TCS has recruited 1100 students from 10 engineering colleges in Orissa with 65% of them from KIIT, ITER and CET Bhubaneswar.

KIMS has approval for 100 MBBS seats
The running headline of Tathya.in says that the Medical Council of India has approved 100 seats for KIMS (Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences), a component of KIIT deemed university. It does not yet show up in the MCI list of MBBS colleges. More details are awaited.
