Infosys plans a pilot special training program for SC/ST students in 6 states including Orissa

Indiatimes has an interview on this with TV Mohandas Pai. Following are some excerpts:

Infosys Technologies with the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore, has just concluded the first course of a Special Training Programme (STP) for SC, ST students aimed at enhancing their employability. TV Mohandas Pai, director, human resources, Infosys, speaks about the programme:

Are you looking at expanding this programme beyond Karnataka?
Ideally, there should be a similar effort in every state. Currently, we plan to conduct pilots in five other states, including Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Orissa. A successful pilot will convince state governments of its need and feasibility.

What about placements post this training?
From our first batch of 90, close to 76 got placed in companies like IBM, EDS, HP, MindTree, Wipro and Infosys itself. We made 23 offers, but only 15-16 joined us which shows the power of this programme. It made them competitive enough to have choices. Placement is based purely on merit.

What’s the investment in this programme?
For the pilot, we invested Rs 3 crore. Starting with the next session, we are looking at Rs 1 crore with a 50-50 partnership with the state government. The government has the funds but lacks the capability to plan and execute something like this.
That’s where we come in. We also got support from our partners like HP, Canara Bank and some other corporate houses.

Meeting in support of KBK Central University called in Malkangiri.

Odisha.com reports on this. Pioneer also reports on this and also on Agami Orissa’s plan for a meeting in Koraput. Following are some excerpts.

A meeting to chalk out the future course of action on demand of a KBK Central University was held at Malkanagiri. Local MLA Nimain Sarkar was the convener at the meeting, … Over 100 persons of the district, including senior citizens, intellectuals, educationists, journalists and representatives of civil society organisations attended the meeting.

A committee, KBK Bikas Parishad, was formed after the meeting with an aim to look into the various developmental aspects of the most neglected undivided KBK districts. RK Patra was nominated as the convener of the committee while Durga Prasad Tripathy was chosen as the president.
Ratnakar Dash was nominated as the general secretary of the committee. Deputy Speaker of the Assembly Prahallad Dora and MLA Nimain Sarkar were chosen as the advisers of the committee.

The committee alleged that the Central Government cheated the people of tribal KBK districts on many occasions. While it was decided to set up a KBK Central University at Koraput, it is now mysteriously shifted to another State by the order of the Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh, the members of the committee alleged. Reiterating the demand for KBK Central University, the members warned of an intense mass movement throughout the State. However, the foundation of the movement will be laid on July 29 at Koraput meeting, which is going to be organised by Agami Orissa.

New Indian Express has a report about a similar school that is not directly listed above. It may be a new one or may be part of one of the above. Following are some excerpts from the New Indian Express report.

City-based International Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences and Research has decided to introduce a four-and-half-year degree programme in physiotherapy from the current academic session.

In all, 20 students would be enrolled in the first batch through a screening test. The programme has been recognised by the State Government and the institute is affiliated to Utkal University, said director Chitrasen Parida. Talking to mediapersons here on Sunday, he said a bachelor degree programme in audiology and speech language pathology is also being introduced from this session.

Both the courses have been approved by the Rehabilitation Council of India. The institute has invested about Rs 70 lakh out of Rs 1.76 crore which it plans to pump in three years for development of supporting infrastructure. Soon it would come up with its own campus.

Chairman of Shreedevi Charitable Trust, Kalyanpuri, Gandhi Chaudhury said a model pre-school for special children has already been established for their holistic development. A comprehensive diagnostic clinic ‘Susruta’ providing services for people with deafness, cerebral palsy, autism, speech and language disorders is functioning from the campus.

Joining Orissa engineering colleges through AIEEE will entail the same fees as through Orissa JEE

New Indian Express reports on this. Following are some excerpts.

The fee structure meant for the JEE would also apply to AIEEE candidates. There will be no separate fee structure for the candidates seeking admission through the AIEEE route, …

The fees for different professional programmes, recommended by Fee Structure Committee and notified by the State Government on July 12, covers them too, he said.

He also informed that the Policy Planning Body (PPB) will decide the details of the counselling for the AIEEE candidates soon. Meanwhile, the State Government has also recommended that each college would submit an affidavit before the Fee Structure Committee stating that they will follow the structure approved by the Government and agreed upon by them.

…, there is also a growing feeling that individual colleges must issue declarations in public on their own stating that they will charge fees as has been jointly decided by them and the committee. It will be an act of self-regulation on their part.
