There are 53 students in the above list. The top junior colleges/schools from where these students come are:

  • 16 are from KBR College Cuttack, including the topper and 3 from the top 2 ranks
  • FM College Balasore (ranks 2, 17, 19, 19)
  • 24 are from BJB College Bhubaneswar, but none from the top 2 ranks
  • Irodov College Bhubaneswar  (rank 11)
  • Royal College Bhubaneswar (ranks 13, 19)
  • Ravenshaw Junior College Cuttack (ranks 15 )
  • Saraswati Vidya Mandir Nilakanthanagar Berhampur (rank 15, 18)
  • Vikash Junior College Baragarh (ranks 17, 19)
  • Jupiter +2 Science College (rank 19)

The performance of KBR College (Pira Bazar, Jagatpur, Cuttack) is extremely impressive. (Before today, I had not heard of it.) the performance of the older colleges, especially Ravenshaw is disappointing. Except BJB, Ravenshaw and FM, none of the other older colleges (such as Khallikote College, SCS College, GM Junior College, Govt. College Rourkela, RD Women’s college, Sailabala Women’s college etc.) are in the above list.

My guess is that there is not much teaching going on in the traditional colleges and the performance in BJB is perhaps only due to the top students going in there.

Karnataka passes an ordinance for Azim Premji University in Bangalore

Following is an excerpt from the blog entry at Education-In-India.

Details about the Azim Premji University

… some details about the Azim Premji University (APU).

    • The APU will be an institution of excellence in the area of education to develop outstanding education thinkers & leaders, and also serve as a think tank for long-term education change and sustainable development. Akin to the IITs, AIIMS, IIMs and the NLSUI respectively focussed on Science & Technology, Medicine, Management and Law, the APU will in effect be an IIE focussed on Education.
    • The APU’s vision is to promote, conceptualize and create a paradigm shift through development of outstanding leadership, research, knowledge and ideas for education and allied development sectors.
    • The objectives of the APU include
      • Creating Intellectual Capital: through research based theory and outstanding, creative and socially committed leaders and thinkers. Expand the frontiers of knowledge in education and allied disciplines
      • Practice informed by sound theory: Serve as a national education resource center and present an alternative authentic voice for educational and social change
      • Demonstrating models for effective development of teachers and education leaders
    • The APU has been set up through a section 25 company and will be autonomous and self-funded with no dependency on funds from the Karnataka Government.
    • The Azim Premji University Ordinance 2009, was passed by the Karnataka Government in November 2009.
    • The APU is being set up on 50 acres of land in Sarjapur, near Bangalore. The land is being provided by the section 25 company, which is acquiring it directly from the owners.
    • It will be a fully residential university.
    • The APU will not be aiming to recover all its expenditure from tuition fees. Any budgetary gap between income and expenditure will be bridged by funds provided by Section 25 company being established by Azim Premji.
    • The first students will join the university in 2011. The APU will start by offering masters level courses and eventually also run a Ph.D. program.

 Two lessons from the above:

1. Orissa should move fast on Vedanta University so that it does not lose the first movers advantage to efforts like above that are also backed by people with deep pockets.

2. Orissa should push the upgradation of the existing five Regional Institutes of Education (one of which is in Bhubaneswar) to National Institutes of Education.

NKC member and JNU Professor Amitabh Mattoo mentions the idea of creation of five knowledge cities in India

Following is an excerpt from his article in Telegraph.

Finally, of course, the HRD ministry must think in terms of a few grand projects which can become models to be emulated in the years to come. The possibility of creating five knowledge cities in different parts of the country in the next five years must be seriously examined. While those would need a private-public partnership, and even the creation of a special purpose vehicle, the HRD ministry could invite state governments to become partners and provide real incentives. Education and skill development, as the prime minister has repeatedly said, can be India’s global opportunity. The time has come now to translate that opportunity into reality, within the term of this government.

The pages http://iitbbsr.orissalinks.com/bbsr.htm and http://iitbbsr.orissalinks.com/future.htm have the arguments that the Orissa government can use.

Proposed Jagadguru Kripalu University for Spiritual Sciences (Naraj-Banki Rd) – recent progress

Update: I am now told that the location is two km after CISF Mundali, towards Banki on the Cuttack-Banki road. The postal location is Mouza Banara, Tahasil Dumpada, District Cuttack. From Chandni Chowk, Cuttack it is 13 km. And from Oberoi Hotel, BBSR, it is 29 km.

It now has its own web page. The web page has some nice drawings and overview of the university.  We copy them here.

Introduction

A unique University that will train highly qualified Spiritual and Yog teachers for spreading the true and ancient science of "Yog" around the world will be built in the state of Orissa. The project will be a part of a spiritual community that will include a Gurukul, a Yog & Naturopathy Health Care Center, a Yogashram, a Charitable Hospital, and Organic cultivation farms.

The proposed university will be developed at Banki, near Cuttack, Orissa, in multiple stages. In the first stage, 110 acres of land has been finalised, and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed by the Trust and the Government of Orissa.

Objectives of the Proposed University

  • To Prepare Qualified teachers, who can then go to schools, colleges and industrial houses to teach the sciences of Spirituality, Yog and Mind management. At present, everyone realizes the imbalance in the education system, due to lack of spiritual education.

  • Introduction of moral education in all educational institutions. The creation of a qualified class of spiritual teachers will enable the introduction of spiritual education in society.

  • To give the spiritually-minded youth a chance to make a career in spirituality, by enabling them to earn a degree, and utilize it for teaching jobs.

  • To enable character building through higher education.

  • To reinforce ethics and morals so that the students may pass these on to the society at large.

  • For the upliftment of the underprivileged segments of society, free education and financial support will be given to 25 percent students from such segments of society.

  • The Proposed University will set a role model for the Universities of the country, in building the moral character of the people.

Courses Offered at the Proposed University

  • Bachelors and Masters in Yogic Sciences.

  • Bachelors and Masters in Vedic Sciences.

  • Teachers, Professors and Principals re-orientation programmes, with special emphasis on Morals and Ethics.

  • Bachelors and Masters in Naturopathy.

  • Bachelors and Masters in Bhakti Yog, in accordance with the philosophy of Jagadguru Shree Kripaluji Maharaj.

  • Research work – Doctorate – in Naturopathy, Vedic Sciences, Bhakti and Yogic Sciences.

  • One year diploma courses in all the above.

  • One month introductory courses in all the above.

  • One month Yog instructors course.

  • Karm-kand training courses for priests for temples in India and abroad.

  • Orientation programmes for Doctors in Yog Therapy.

Secular Courses- The students will also get an opportunity to do non-spiritual courses that offer the maximum job opportunities in the modern world, such as Information Technology and Business Management. This will enable them to get excellent careers in secular fields, if they so desire.

Related Projects:

Yoga Therapy and Naturopathy Healthcare Centre.  It will attract outdoor patients from nearby towns and also neighboring villages. Also, indoor patients desirous of benefiting from yog therapy.

Gurukul. Will train children from childhood in the life of purity, charity, austerity, and spiritual knowledge.

Yogashram. Yoga shibirs will be conducted for the general public, for members, and for industrial houses.  Such shibirs will be of 3 days duration, one week duration, two weeks duration and four weeks duration.

Old-age home. Devotionally minded people, who are leading a retired life, will be invited to come and stay in a spiritual environment.  They will also be given an opportunity to lend voluntary seva in the above projects, and will form the manpower base for the project.

Hospital.  The villagers of the nearby Banara village have demanded a hospital for them.  Such a hospital, equipped with modern facilities will be built, to provide medical aid to everyone residing within 10 kilometers of the ashram.

IIT Bhubaneswar temporary and expected permanent location

(This is inspired by the post http://iitbbs.blogspot.com/2008/12/latest-news.html.)

The IIT Bhubaneswar will be temporarily located in the IIT Kharagpur Extension Center. It is located 1km from the NH-5 Jaydev Vihar exit towards Nandan Kanan. It is behind Ginger hotel and Swosti Plaza hotel. Across these two hotels is the Trident Oberoi and about 300 mts away is the Mayfair lagoon Hotel. Each of these hotels have many nice restaurants. About 700 mts from IIT location is the Pal Heights shopping complex that has a very good restaurant as well as an Oxford book store. About 500 mts the other direction is the Sandy’s Square which has a Smoking Joes Pizza.

Next to the IIT location is the Shyamasam Dham, one of the Main Ashrams of Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat.

About 150-200 mts to the IIT location is Gandhi Park and Janata Maidan. The later can be a ground to play outdoor games such as Cricket, Football and Hockey.

The IIT location is in the North east corner of the large Institute of Mineral and Materials Technology (formerly RRL) campus. It is expected that the IIT students will have access to this campus and some of its amenities including its outdoor  playing areas. The Kalinga Stadium and its swimming pool is about 1.5 kms from the IIT location.

The Maharaja theater is 2 kms away. XIMB (Basketball, Tennis courts, Football ground, auditorium) is 600 mts away. Institute of Physics  is 700 mts away. Utkal University is 1 km away.

The ESI Hospital is about 250 mts from the IIT location and Kalinga Hospital is about 1 kms away. (Next to Kalinga Hospital is the Institute of Life Sciences and Regional Medical research Center).

Following are some maps. In the maps with one big red dot, the dot indicates the location of the temporary campus of the IIT Bhubaneswar. In the maps with two red marks, the larger mark indicates the expected permanent location of IIT Bhubaneswar.
