{"id":1207,"date":"2008-03-02T12:25:32","date_gmt":"2008-03-02T16:25:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.orissalinks.com\/orissagrowth\/?p=1207"},"modified":"2008-12-21T12:02:25","modified_gmt":"2008-12-21T16:02:25","slug":"companies-in-orissa-that-allegedly-do-not-pay-attention-to-pollution-government-seem-to-be-soft-on-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.orissalinks.com\/orissagrowth\/archives\/1207","title":{"rendered":"Companies in Orissa that allegedly do not pay attention to pollution; Government seems to be soft on them"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following are excerpts from <a href=\"http:\/\/tathya.in\/story.asp?sno=1665\" target=\"_self\">a report in tathya.in<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> Take the case of <u>Bhusan Power &amp; Steel (BPSL)<\/u>, an integrated power and steel plant set up at Thelkoloi in Sambalpur district.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>The Orissa Pollution Control Board (OPCB) on 16 February issued a closure notice to BPSL for violating the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act and Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act.<\/p>\n<p>BPSL was asked to stop all production until further orders, failing which stringent penal proceedings would be initiated against the company.<\/p>\n<p>According to sources though the company is producing power for more than 2 years is has no designated site to dump fly ash released from the plants.<\/p>\n<p>In absence of a proper place the company authorities were dumping in nearby places like Laripalli, for which villagers raised hue and cry.<\/p>\n<p>Now they are dumping in Khinda, said a source.<\/p>\n<p>Secondly BPSL filled up the river bed of the Bheden River by dumping earth.<\/p>\n<p>These, according to environmental norms are serious offences.<\/p>\n<p>OPCB had been asking BPSL to conform to environmental norms for the past six months, said the source.<\/p>\n<p>However, the company allegedly did not pay any heed to it, added an official.<\/p>\n<p>OPCB waited for six months and finally decided on closing down the unit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;  On 1 March OPCB has lifted the closure notice.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; Months ago when Dr. Hrushikesh Panda was at the helm of Forest &amp; Environment Department, <u>Tata Refractories Limited (TRL)<\/u> at Belpahar,&nbsp;  was accused of pollution.<\/p>\n<p>He impressed upon the OPCB to issue closure notice to the company.<\/p>\n<p>OPCB issued closure notice and the Chief Minister announced the closure of TRL in the floor of the House.<\/p>\n<p>So unrelenting was he that the State Government was to shift Dr.Panda to provide relief to TRL.<\/p>\n<p>With so many pollution prone large mineral based industries coming up in Orissa, the soft approach of the Government&rsquo;s Green Authority bodes ill for the state, feel an environmentalist.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Following are excerpts from a report in tathya.in.
