{"id":1217,"date":"2008-03-05T13:53:39","date_gmt":"2008-03-05T17:53:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.orissalinks.com\/orissagrowth\/?p=1217"},"modified":"2008-03-05T13:54:08","modified_gmt":"2008-03-05T17:54:08","slug":"oliver-ridley-turtle-nesting-sites-in-orissa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.orissalinks.com\/orissagrowth\/archives\/1217","title":{"rendered":"Oliver Ridley turtle nesting sites in Orissa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following are excerpts from <a href=\"http:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/Turtles_begin_mass_nesting\/articleshow\/2840279.cms\" target=\"_self\">a report in Times of India<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Thousands of endangered Olive Ridley turtles have begun mass nesting on the coast of eastern Orissa state, home to the world&#8217;s largest nesting site for the turtles, officials said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Over 20,000 turtles came ashore for mass-nesting early on Wednesday, within a two-kilometre stretch from the mouth of the Rushikulya river in Ganjam district, a local forest department official said.<\/p>\n<p>The Rushikulya river mouth is around 175 km from the state capital Bhubaneswar.<\/p>\n<p>For more than a decade, the beach at the Rushikulya river mouth has been witnessing mass arrival of the endangered Olive Ridley turtles. But the turtles did not land here last year, the official said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; There are three mass nesting sites of turtles in Orissa: <u>Nasi Islands in Gahirmatha, Devi river mouth and Rushikulya river mouth<\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; The Rushikulya river mouth is the only place along the coast where turtles are safe from marauding trawlers, said Biswajit Mohanty, secretary of the NGO Wildlife Society of Orissa.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Following are excerpts from a report in Times of India.
