RAJYA SABHA<\/o:p><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Government has declared three rivers\/canal system, as National Waterways namely (i) the <\/span>Ganga<\/span><\/st1:place> from <\/span>Allahabad<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:city> to Haldia (1620km) (ii) the <\/span>Brahmaputra<\/span><\/st1:place> from Sadiya to Dhubri (891km) and  (iii) the <\/span>West Coast<\/span><\/st1:placename> <\/span>Canal<\/span><\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> from Kollam to Kottapuram along with Champakara and Udyogmandal canals (205km). Basic infrastructural facilities for shipping and <\/strong>navigation namely navigational channel, navigational aids, and terminals are being provided on these National Waterways. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Further, following three rivers\/canal systems are in the process of declaration as National Waterways.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

(i)         <\/span>Kakinada-Puducherry Canals along with rivers <\/span>Godavari<\/span><\/st1:place> and <\/span>Krishna<\/span><\/st1:place> (1095km). <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

(ii)        <\/span><\/span>East Coast<\/span><\/st1:placename> <\/span>Canal<\/span><\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place><\/a> along with river Brahmani and Mahanadi Delta (623km).<\/a> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

(iii)        <\/span>River Barak (121km). <\/o:p><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>An action plan has been drawn up to make the three existing National Waterways fully functional by March 2010, subject to availability of funds. <\/o:p><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
