Union Government through Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) develops inland water terminals\/ports only on those waterways which are declared as National Waterways (NWs<\/span>). Following five waterways have so far been declared as <\/span>NWs<\/span>:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

(i)    <\/span><\/span>National Waterway-1<\/strong>: Allahabad-Haldia<\/span> <\/span>stretch of the <\/span><\/span>Ganga<\/span><\/span><\/st1:place> <\/span>– <\/span>Bhagirathi-Hooghly<\/span> <\/span>river<\/span> <\/span>in the States of Uttar Pradesh, <\/span><\/span>Bihar<\/span><\/st1:place>, <\/span>Jharkhand<\/span> <\/span>and <\/span><\/span>West Bengal<\/span><\/st1:place>.  <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

(ii)    <\/span><\/span>National Waterway-2<\/strong>: <\/span>Sadiya<\/span>–Dhubri<\/span> <\/span>stretch of the <\/span><\/span>Brahmaputra<\/span><\/span><\/st1:place> <\/span>river<\/span> <\/span>in the State of Assam.  <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

(iii)   <\/span><\/span>National Waterway-3<\/strong>:  <\/span><\/span>Kollam-Kottapuram<\/span> <\/span>stretch of <\/span><\/span>West Coast<\/span><\/st1:placename> <\/span><\/span>Canal<\/span><\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> <\/span>andChampakara<\/span> <\/span>and <\/span>Udyogmandal<\/span> <\/span>canals  <\/span><\/span>in<\/span> <\/span>the State of <\/span><\/span>Kerala<\/span><\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

(iv)   <\/span><\/span>National Waterway-4<\/strong>:  <\/span><\/span>Kakinada-Pudducherry<\/span> <\/span>stretch of canals comprising ofKakinada<\/span> <\/span>canal, <\/span>Eluru<\/span> <\/span>canal, <\/span>Commamur<\/span> <\/span>canal, Buckingham canal and theKaluvelly<\/span> <\/span>tank, <\/span>Bhadrachalam-Rajahmundry<\/span> <\/span>stretch of river <\/span>Godavari<\/span> <\/span>andWazirabad-Vijaywada<\/span> <\/span>stretch of river Krishna in the States of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil <\/span>Nadu<\/span> <\/span>and the Union Territory of <\/span>Puducherry<\/span>.  <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

(v)   <\/span><\/span>National Waterway-5<\/strong>:   <\/span><\/span>Talcher-Dhamra<\/span> <\/span>stretch of <\/span>Brahmani-Kharsua-Dhamra<\/span>rivers, <\/span>Geonkhali-Charbatia<\/span> <\/span>stretch of <\/span><\/span>East Coast<\/span><\/st1:placename> <\/span><\/span>Canal<\/span><\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>, <\/span>Charbatia-Dhamra<\/span> <\/span>stretch of Matai <\/span>river<\/span> <\/span>and <\/span><\/span>Mahanadi<\/span><\/span><\/st1:place> <\/span>delta rivers between <\/span>Mangalgadi<\/span> <\/span>and <\/span>Paradip<\/span> <\/span>in the States of West Bengal and <\/span>Orissa<\/span>.   <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Out of these <\/span>NWs<\/span>, developmental works including development of inland water terminals\/ports are being carried out by Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) on NW-1, 2 and 3 only.  <\/span><\/span>Developmental works on <\/span>NWs<\/span> <\/span>4 & 5 have not yet commenced.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
