Construction of AIIMS-like institute in Bhubaneswar is 65% complete; first batch with 50 students to start in August this year; Center coming up with a scheme to fund 100-150 crores per college for upgradation of the three state medical colleges

January 31st, 2012

Following is an excerpt from a report in Business Standard.

The fist academic session of the city centre of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) medical college is set to begin from August this year. The 500-bed multi-speciality hospital is expected to start functioning from December 2012.

“The session for the first batch of students for AIIMS medical college will begin from August 2012 with an intake of 50 seats. We expect the hospital to be operational from December this year. Work on the AIIMS campus is 65 per cent complete,” said P K Pradhan, Union health secretary. On the state government’s demand for funds for seat hike in three government run medical colleges, Pradhan said, “The Chief Secretary has said that the state government intends to raise intake of each of three medical colleges from 150 to 250. This requires an investment of Rs 100-150 crore per college for infrastructure upgrade. We are coming up with a scheme wherein we can provide funds to the state government for upgradation of infrastructure at medical colleges.”

Various Odia papers report that as of today 65% of the Hospital building construction and 70% of the college building construction are completed.

Its good news at one end..but unfortunate when we see other institutions in other parts of the state especially BPUT.My predictions will come true.Even the IIT will complete before BPUT construction and i dont see even a ray of hope that BPUT will function from RKL.Whom we can blame for this ? The OPECA or the state govt.Dosent matter who but its actually having a negative effect in the whole of Western Orissa. We cant call the present development in Orissa as all round development.I am sorry but i am now forced to feel the same now.Sometimes ignorance is not bliss !

    @ Ranjan

It is unfortunate to bring the regional issue here that the western part of Odisha is feeling bad. Don’t you feel the whole of Odisha feel bad about this. Though I don’t belong to western part of the state I felt proud when I heard that one of the top executives of my company in Mumbai recently hired, had done his engineering from the then UCE, Burla. Please don’t bring this regionalism to this sphere when we all are struggling to recognise our state in the national level.

If we are committed to have a technical university in the state we should adhere to that. I sincerely appeal to the all the concerned authorities to enhance the work and allocate adequate fund for the speedy development of the university. We should have some really attractive PG engineering courses and research centres there. Still Odisha treats Rourkela as the industruial capital of Odisha. Lets not forget that.

I would also like to suggest here that the institutions in Burla should be under the newly formed VSS unitary university. This will be a value addition to the university having both engineering and medical science at one place. This was one of the recomendations of the Damodar Nanda committee on development of IITs that has been accepted by the central govt. This will also help to have a unified research facility for bio-engineering. This will be also a blessing for the VSS medical college to stop the inter medical college transfer based on which good staff are getting transferred to Cuttack.

we are feeling great because we are Indian. our country is great . our culture
is great. Then why we are telling that centre govt. is been neglected our state ? Centre govt has been neglected to Odisha.same thing we should saying state govt. has been neglected western Odisha. If state govt has not been negelctec to western Odisha then remind only one big development work done by state govt in western Odisha last 13 years.

    Dear Debi,

Appreciate your comments. However i am not here to raise any regional issues but raising all the genuine facts.Lets talk about the IIT and AIIMS.Its construction started way after BPUT construction was initiated .Still its going to start by this year. Now tell me whom we can blame the state govt or OPECA.Whoever got to take the blame but the people of Orissa in general and poeple of RKL in particular are loosers. Now lets talk about AIIMS.When it was decided to setup AIIMS at BBSR why we need to have ESIC at BBSR as well. Why cant we have ESIC hospital at RKl when several times the state govt was informed about the highest numebr of insured people are from RKL region. The VEdanta Alumina did teh setup for its Trauma hopital at BBSR when its factories are at JSG and Lanjigarh.I would have been more than glad if it would have been set at Lanjigarh which is one of the most backward region of India.Lets come to STPI RKL.Why cant we have comapnies like Infy and TCS open there base at RKL..when these companies can open at tata nagar instead of Ranchi.Lets come to the airport. Why we cant have the present airport at RKL to be the second airport till teh time JSG airport is constructed when we are mulling for an intl airport at BBSR.Why we need to wait for another 4 to 5 years for an airport in this region.IIIT at Berhampur got no news at all.Look how much fight one has to fight to just clear the second Brahmani bridge at RKL.See when you compare the BBSR-CTC graph with rest of Orissa there is big gap and its widening day by day.I am not impressed with the idea that hospitals for poor are made at a place which is beyond the reach of the poor.I wish AIIMS could have setup in any of the place s in KBK.Orissa devlopment is counted in regard of BBSR.We are overall not a developed state like Gujrat, rajasthan,Punjab and Tamil Nadu.We are becoming another West Bengal where Kolkata is way ahead of other cities in WB.Its just the BBSR-CTC region is developed and rest is neglected. And yes Kalinga nagar is now considered as industrial capital of Orissa.Mr CM said this in one of his speech some years back.

    Dear Ranjan,

Appreciate and fully compassionate with your views. Frankly, I wonder why the state govt. wanted to have a brand new airport when we have a facility at Rourkela. This could have been developed to a full fledged airport with less money and time.

Appeal those who feel that the coastal Odisha is really developed, please go to the Kendrapara district. This is one of the most politically motivated places of the state. Half of the interior places are scarcely connected through good roads.

With all supporting the ESIC hospital at Roukela. It is a massive blunder on the state govt.’s part to relocate it to Bhubaneswar. However, I strongly feel that Ispat General Hospital should be developed into a full fledged medical college. RSP should develop this as they are doing this in other places.

I also feel that the Cuttack-Bhubaneswar area, we are thinking big about is practically not a big urban centre in the country itself. Nashik and Kanpur are bigger than twin city and even very similar to Navi-Mumbai itself. What I feel is let us develop a national level urban centre first which is on the making and could be used as the development epicentre for the whole state. Please do not forget that Odisha is still a not well to do state and we are one of the lowest in per capita income in comparision to the national level. Let us hope for the best and in the coming budget they have hinted to make it more than 50K crores. May some more allocation be done to the projects we are aspiring for.

    Thanks

I appreciate the maturity shown on part of some of the commentators here. Though I belong to coastal Odisha, I want overall development of our state. I do not want any Bhubaneswar/Cuttack centric attitude. There are already lot of private colleges in BBSR. But I doubt their QA aspects. BBSR is already saturated. BBSR is occupied by Biharis and Marwaris , who have pushed the property markets to such an extent that many Hard working Odia families are struggling to get on with their daily lives, let alone buying properties in our state. Time will come when Odias will be pushed out of our state. The government is not paying attention to this demographic issue. Now coming back to western Odisha, KBK needs special attention. Every Odia has a duty to be proactively involved in the development of this region of our state.
