SBI extends Scholar plus scheme to NIT Rourkela: easy availability of student loans

Our institute has become the first among all NITs to earn the trust of SBI to sanction study loan to our students by the NIT campus branch itself ( in stead of the branches located in their native places) without asking for any sort of security. This facility was earlier available only to reputed institutes like IIT and IIM under Scholar Plus Scheme.
The story behind how this was achieved:
This has become possible due to strong follow up and bargain made by our director insisting on exclusive new ATM counter in the campus, Internet banking facility to all students (now students need not stand in the queue to pay fees in cash/cheque either in institute or halls) and this study loan, otherwise we would have given permission to other banks to open their branches in the campus to break the monopoly of SBI since inception.

Orissa government asks committee to take a second look at the medical college fees
Fearing public anger the Orissa government has asked the committee that recommended a 4.5 lakh/year fees for private medical colleges to take a second look at that. Following are excerpts from Pioneer’s report on this.
Drawing flak from student bodies as well as the public, the State Government on Tuesday appealed to the Fee Structure Committee (FSC) to reconsider its decision on the hike of admission fees particularly in the medical stream.
A student has to pay at least Rs 4.5 lakh per annum as against last year’s Rs 2.2 lakh to get into a medical college. In this connection, Industry Minister Biswa Bhusan Harichandan called a high-level meeting of officials on Tuesday. Secretary, Industry also attended the meeting.
It may be noted that the FSC headed by a retired justice had stipulated the annual fee for the 4-year MBBS degree at Rs 4.5 lakh. Orissa has 750 MBBS seats.
The State Government is of the opinion that if it sticks to this fee structure recommended by the Committee, a public resentment would certainly sweep the entire State.
"It is the Government which will face the public anger," said a senior official on the condition of anonymity, adding that if required, the Government may ignore the recommendations of the Panel for the greater interest of the student community.
However, the Government has not yet decided whether it would appeal to the Committee about reconsidering the decision on the admission to the engineering and other streams like MBA.

Sikshya O’ Anusandhan, under which comes ITER, has been granted deemed university status. Following is Sambada’s news item on this.

Yet another engineering college coming to Bhubaneswar
Indus College of Engineering has advertised for positions and mentions in its website that it has received letter of intent and waiting for letter of approval. Earlier we mentioned some of the other colleges that are listed in the BPUT 2007 counseling brochure for the first time. Indus does not appear there.
From the "about us" page of this college, I found out that it is being established by a trust led by Dr. Ravi Reddy. Dr. Reddy is a B.Tech from IIT Kharagpur and a Ph.D from University of Houston, USA. He was one of the main person at NIST, Berhampur. Based on this information, I think this will become a good engineering college.

Several NRIs including three US based professors are starting an engineering college near Bhubaneswar. The college is tentatively named as Bhubaneswar Institute of Technology and a brief biography of its US based trustees is here. Business standard reports on this. Following are some excerpts.
Orissa is all set to have an all non-resident Indian (NRI) sponsored degree engineering college.
The new degree engineering college is being set up near Khandagiri on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar by seven US-based NRIs. The Orissa government is actively promoting the endeavour. …
The NRIs are all professors and analysts from different US-based IT institutions and colleges. The Orissa government has allotted 20-acres of land near Khandigiri to the seven-member consortium for setting up the engineering college.
… state IT minister Surya Narayan Patro said, "the seven US-based NRIs have long approached us for setting up the degree college. Finally the government has decided to provide land for the venture".
According to Patro, "the engineering college would shortly be set up and construction work would begin soon."

Orissa’s dismal performance in IIT entrance examinations; no one cares
The Telegraph has an article titled "IIT wake-up bell for backbencher Bengal" where it rues the low performance of students from Bengal in the IIT entrance exams. It concludes with: "Fewer students from Bengal in the IITs and IIMs mean fewer decision makers of tomorrow from Bengal." Orissa has been doing much worse than Bengal, but hardly anyone in Orissa is worried about it. Its time decision makers in Orissa, start worrying about it and taking corrective actions.

Regional College of Management plans campuses in Dubai, Jamshedpur and Delhi
Bhubaneswar based Regional College of Management plans a campus in Dubai. Business standard reports on this. Following are some excerpts.
Orissa’s oldest management college, Regional College of Management (RCM) is planning an overseas campus at Dubai. The campus, in all likelihood, would be set up by 2009 with an investment of Rs 10 crore.
… "Setting up of the Dubai campus is in an advanced stage of negotiation. We are confident it would fructify shortly", he added.
For setting up the Dubai campus, RCM authorities have already started teaching Arabic to students at the institute’s School of Languages. About 35-40 students are currently taking training in Arabic language to suit the requirements of Dubai.
RCM, meanwhile, has also started tying up with different Dubai-based firms for finding placements for students.
"Within the next two years we would comfortably be able to manage high placements in Dubai from our College," says Pal. These are mostly in the areas of retail management.
Alongside, RCM is planning to set up two management colleges at Jamshedpur and Delhi. This would take up an investment of Rs 10 crore. Pal said that the college already has an annual fund reserve of over Rs 5 crore. We would utilise the fund for the new colleges and the remaining would be sourced through bank loans.
… In Master of Computer Application (MCA) , RCM has achieved a 100% placement, with almost 85% of its students placed in top IT companies of Bangalore.

ASBM (Asian School of Business Management)’s dream
ASBM plans to start an engineering college in the coming year and beyond that dreams of becoming a private university approved by the state. Following are some excerpts of a Business standard report on this.
Bhubaneswar-based Asian School of Business Management (ASBM) is setting up a full-fledged degree engineering college, to be christened ASBM Institute of Technology (ASBMIT), from the next academic session of 2008-09. …
Details of the project is being worked by the Hyderabad based ZCS Consulting Limited. The college building would also be set up by another Hyderabad based construction company – Arunoday Construction.
Alongside, the B-school is also setting up a new Undegraduate (UG) Campus on a 25-acre plot adjoining to its existing campus at Chandaka on the outskirts of the Temple City.
The UG campus would be housing ASBMIT, ASBM School of Information Technology, Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA) discipline and junior college for plus 2 commerce course. …
All the decisions were taken at ASBM’s Board of Governors (BoG) meeting on July 2, 2007.
…, " a total of around Rs 20 crore would be invested in future for setting up the degree engineering college, school of information technology and other courses like BBA and plus 2 commerce".
With the higher education department of the Orissa government already announcing that provisions are being kept in the state for setting up 6 private universities, Pattanayak said, "ASBM’s name figures prominently among them and we are awaiting the government approval".
As for the engineering course, it would have four streams – electronics and telecommunication ( E&TC), electronics and electrical engineering ( E&E), Computer Science and Information Technology ( IT).
During the first academic year 240 students would be admitted to the engineering degree course. The School of Information Technology would be having a 2-year course where the basic focus would be on Information Technology (IT) management. The end view for the school is to get comfortable placements for students in different IT multinationals. ...

Tathya reports that medical counseling will be redone
Tathya.in first reported that in light of the fact that Berhampur and Sambalpur medical colleges will now have additional 43 seats each, the medical counseling in Orissa will now be redone. This will allow students who were forced to pick a private college, or who just opted out because they could not afford paying the fees in a private college, to now try to get one of the new seats in Berhampur and Sambalpur medical colleges. Fee structure for engineering, MCA, MBA, BDS and Medical announced
Finally the government has announced the fee structure for the various degrees. This has been reported in several places. Following are excerpts from the report in Tathya.in.
- The annual fee for private medical colleges has been proposed at Rs 4.5 lakh.
- For BDS degree announced fee structure is Rs.2.10 lakh per annum.
- The fees per year would range from Rs 32,000 to Rs 58,000 for different engineering colleges.
- ITER, Bhubaneswar, NIST ,Berhampur, GIE&T,Gunupur and SIT, Bhubaneswar will be charging Rs58,000 per annum.
- Lowest fee will be charged by PKACE, Bargarh, which is Rs32,000.
- For a MBA degree highest fee Rs. 90,000 will be charged by RCM, Bhubaneswar, RIMS, Rourkela and IPSR, Cuttack.
- KISD, Bhubaneswar will be charging lowest fee of Rs.40,000 for a management degree.
- In MCA a student has to cough out highest fee of Rs.75,000 in ITER, Bhubaneswar and lowest fee of Rs. 28,000 will be charged by BIET, Bhadrak.
- For a Pharmacy Program the highest fee structure is Rs.45, 000 and lowest is Rs.35,000.
