Opportunities in retail management and logistics

With new malls opening up in various places there is a lot of job opportunity in the areas of retail management and logistics. New Indian Express reports on this and about some business schools that offer courses on this topic. Following are some excerpts.

How about making a career in logistics? Industry estimates that the sector, going through acute manpower shortage, could create employment opportunities to the tune of 50,000 in the next five years.

The mushrooming malls and the expanding chain of retail stores on the neighbourhood are indicative of growing need of skilled hands.

With an annual growth rate of 25 percent, this is one sector that would see more and more avenues opening up in the times to come.

Gati, a leading player in the sector, has already offered placement letters to the first batch students of PG programme in Logistics and Supply Chain Management being offered by city-based Asian School of Business Management (ASBM).

“Our aim is to hire graduates who intend to assume leadership positions in supply chain management and contribute to the competitiveness of the firms globally,” said managing director of company Mahendra Agarwal while giving away the letters and kicking off the programme on the ASBM campus here on Friday.

It is the first of its kind in the country and has been jointly designed by ASBM and Gati. Students would have the advantage of working in Gati’s warehouse for hands-on experience after 14 months of the course.

While 30 students have been enrolled in the first batch, the institute plans to raise the strength in the coming years.

So what would the sector expect from you? According to Agarwal – who was decorated with the ‘logistics man of India’ on the occasion – you ought to possess an analytical mind to succeed in this field.

Letter to SAC-PM on science magnet schools

Update: IMSA website is a bit hard to navigate; following are some important links.

*******************************************************************

Dear esteemed SACPM:

Thank you for your role in the creation of the 6 IISc type institutes that the PM mentioned today in his address at Mumbai. I assume he meant the 5 IISERs and the NISER in Bhubaneswar.

I have been interacting with the NISER Bhubaneswar and getting some feedback on the IISERs. Its a bit worrisome that many students are going to IISERs because they could not get into IITs. I am told some IISER students gave the IIT JEE again and then moved. That is partly because the current 10+2 schools do not encourage students towards a career in science. The best science minded students get influenced by the big hype about IITs and engineering, and unless appropriate strategies are made they may not opt for science at IISERs.

I have read regrading plans for big scholarships for students pursuing 5 yr integrated M.Sc. That is a good step.

Regardless, I propose that the government of India establish at least one science magnet high school, perhaps boarding schools, in each state during the 11th plan. These schools could partly feed the IISERs. Its role would be similar to the role of Sainik Schools vis-a-vis NDA and the Indian military academy. The science magnet schools could be from class 8 or 9 to 12 with the goal of exposing the wonders of science and arousing the scientific creativity among the most talented youngsters of the country. It will also indirectly shield them from the hype of the IITs. (I am an IIT graduate so I can say that without being accused of being jealous of IITs.)

I currently live in the USA and there are many science magnet high schools in the USA. I do not know of any in India. (IIT Coaching high schools in Kota or other places don’t count. I am told at best certain schools have special science groupings and there are those junior science colleges at +2 level.) To understand what I mean by a science magnet school I would request you to explore the web page of the Illinois Math and Science Academy (http://www.imsa.edu). 40% of IMSA faculty have Ph.Ds and it has a Nobel laureate as a residential scholar.
There are many other such science magnet schools in the USA such as http://www.dallasisd.org/schools/hs/sem/ (School of Science and Engineering in Dallas), http://www.lsmsa.edu/Welcome/index.htm (The Louisiana School of Math, Science and Arts), http://www.bsu.edu/academy/ (The Indiana Academy for Science Mathematics and Humanities, associated with a university), http://www.bxscience.edu/?rn=7944 (Bronx high school of science ), http://www.ncssm.edu/ (North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics), and http://www.tams.unt.edu/ (Texas Academy of Maths and Sciences, associated with a university). There is a list of such schools world wide at
http://jubilee.batelco.jo/Links/tabid/55/Default.aspx but none are in India.

If this interests you I would be happy to provide more pointers and may be able to put in touch with Indian origin students studying at IMSA, Illinois and/or their parents.

Thanks again for the revolutionary steps that you all have taken for India and I believe the proposed magnet schools will complement that. If you like the idea, please please consider having one of the initial/pilot schools in Orissa, my home state. We have already done some groundwork on that. Actually, the initial set of schools could be located near the IISER, NISER and IIsc campus. In this regard, please note that some of the science magnet schools in US are associated with universities. (IMSA is not.)

best regards
Chitta
ps — Perhaps you have already thought about this.

Which option is better IISER, NIT or IIST and why?

Someone asked the above question in Yahoo Answers India! Following was my answer.

Which option is better IISER, NIT or IIST and why?

It depends on what you want. The goal of IISERs and NISER Bhubaneswar is to focus on science and produce good scientists. If you have a choice between these institutes, you are a pretty good student. Whatever you do seriously you will be successful. Be confident of that. Heck, even graduates of private colleges in backwater towns get jobs.

So now, IISERs were made because India was falling behind in Science. In the past India had great scientists some of whom went on to get Nobel prizes. But with the IIT brand name and corresponding hype (I am an ex-IITian) every one, who can, now goes to IIT and most study engineering. Science departments, although exist in IITs, have a second class status. That has resulted in India falling behind in Science.

So the government’s aim in establishing IISERs and NISER Bhubaneswar was to create as good institutes as IITs but focused on Science.

One must realize that basic research in science later leads to developments in Engineering and Technology. So unless good talent also goes to science, the pipeline will become empty.

So, if you want to study science, you should go to IISERs or NISER. If your goal is to get a degree, and a job or to go for MBA (in IIMs) after that, then NITs are better for you.

Specialized government management institutions of Orissa

Many may not know that there are two state government funded and one central government funded management-n-IT institutes in Orissa. (Here, we are not counting the management programs at the universities or the one proposed at NIT Rourkela.) The central govt funded management institute is Madhusudan institute of co-operative management. It offers MBA and DCA and many certificate courses. Following is a quote from its "About Us" pages.

The Madhusudan Institute of Co-operative Management (MICM) is one of the premier Management Institute of the state established in the year 1955-56. The MICM is functioning under the aegis of National Council for Co-operative Training (NCCT), New Delhi, being financed by the Ministry of Agriculture, (Department of Co-operation) Government of India. The basic objective of the Institute is to develop human resources for efficient management by organising various management training programmes.

The two state government funded management-n-IT institutes are:

  • Center for IT Education (CITE), Bhubaneswar, a wing of Orissa State Electronics Development Corp. (govt.)
  • Institute of Management & Information Technology, (Formerly College of Accountancy & Management), Cuttack – 753 007 Dist: Cuttack. (govt) (location)

One year P.G. Diploma in Banking and Insurance Management: From Utkal University in collaboration with ICICI bank

You may recall that ICICI bank recently (on May 24th) signed an MOU with the Orissa government and also another one with Utkal University. The later was about starting courses whose graduates would most likely be hired by ICICI. They have moved fast and today there is an advertisement for a one year P.G. Diploma in Banking and Insurance Management offered by DDCE Utkal University in collaboration with ICICI bank. The filled forms, supposed to be available at a DDCE site (not available yet though), is due 20th June 2007 and the entrance exam to select 60 is on 1st July 2007.

More on Ravenshaw University

Samaja reports more news on Ravenshaw University. Following are some points mentioned in their article:

  • Ravenshaw has advertised for registration in its Ph.D/D.Litt/D.Sc program.
  • They will semester system in the Bachelors and Masters level with half monthly examinations with four internal evaluations a year.
  • Application form and admission brochure are now available in their website and May 30 is the deadline for application.
  • Ravenshaw will not wait for the +3 results to come out and will finish admission based on the entrance exams by June.
  • They are trying to have five year integrated M.Sc programs and if this program is established this year then they will admit students to this program from the students who have qualified for +3. The students do not have to apply separately.
  • The state has released 10.5 crores to the university.
  • A UGC team of experts led by Prof. S. Ramegowda (former Chairman, AICTE and former Vice-Chancellor, Karnataka University) will visit on June 12th.

Besides the above news from the Samaj article, I heard that the VC of Ravenshaw has met some Ravenshaw alumni who are in academia in Orissa and has sought their advice. This is a very good move on the VC’s part as there are some really top-notch academicians in Orissa with Ravenshaw ties.

ICICI Bank will collaborate with Utkal University in setting up courses in banking and insurance

Tathya reports that ICICI will collaborate with Utkal University to start courses in banking and insurance. I guess this will be mutually beneficial to both Utkal University and ICICI. The later will get a good pool to hire its employees. More about ICICI’s plan in Orissa is at this sister site (direct link).

NISER will share its entrance exam with UM-DAE

Fiver year integrated M.Sc programs are being started at UM-DAE, a new autonomous center for excellence in Basic Sciences jointly set up by University of Mumbai in collaboration with Dept. of Atomic Energy. It will be taught by faculty from nearby institutes such as IIT Bombay, BARC, Univ. of Mumbai and TIFR. The entrance exam for this program is the same one as for NISER, Bhubaneswar. So in a sense, NISER now has head-to-head competition in terms of students. Unless NISER moves quickly and uses its funding advantage to build a nice campus and hire top-notch faculty it may lose out.

NISER has a new webpage; admission ad appears in papers etc.

NISER now has a new and more professional looking web page. Its ad for admission appears in Samaja. Its website also has the application form and information brochure.

Eyecatching scholarships from Dept. of Sc. and Tech. for 5 yr integrated MSc students

Indian Express reports (thanks to Debendra Mohapatra for the tip on this) that the Department of Science and Technology of India has decided to offer 10,000 scholarships annually of Rs 1 lakh/year for students joining 5 year integrated M.Sc programs. The scheme was announced by the DST secretary T. Ramasami on April 10th at IISER Pune. It has not yet appeared in the Dept. of Sc. and Tech. website.

At present only few places in India offer such 5 yr M.Sc programs. Some of the places I know of are IISER Pune and Kolkata, NISER Bhubaneswar, IITs, BITs Pilani, Indian School of Mines, University of Mysore, University of Hyderabad, BESU, CUSAT, Pondicherry University, Sastra University, University of Pune, St. Xaviers Calcutta and some NITs.

It has been reported [1,2:ugc,3:kerela] that the UGC has also jumped into the fray in supporting universities and institutions that will have 5 yr integrated M.Sc programs.

This information has been passed on to key people in the Orissa government and they have promised to look into starting such programs in some of the universities and autonomous colleges in Orissa.
