Until recently NIT Rourkela and UCE Burla were the only places in Orissa that offered M.Tech programs in engineering disciplines. Now several other colleges also offer M.Tech programs. BPUT has advertised for these programs and that ad contains the full list, except for IIIT, Utkal, KIIT and NIT RKL. We reproduce that list for convenience. In Bhubaneswar area:

  • IIIT Bhubaneswar – Computer Science (60) – added on 2nd August 2007
  • Utkal University – Computer Science (30)
  • KIIT, Bhubaneswar – Civil with WRM (Water Resource Engineering) (18), Civil with CEM (Construction Engineering & Management) (18), Electrical (18), Mechanical (18), Computer Science (18), Electronics & Telecommunication (18)

  • ABIT, Cuttack – M. Arch (20 seats)

Others:

  • NIST Berhampur- Electronics and Communication Eng. (18)
  • GIET Gunupur – Computer Science & Eng. (18), Industrial eng. (18), Electronics & Communications eng. (18).
  • NIT Rourkela – Ceramic Engineering, Chemical Engineering (Including Biochemical Engineering& Bio technology), Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering (Including Instrumentation Engineering), Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical & Materials Engineering, Mining Engineering
  • UCE Burla – Communication System Engineering (18), Heat Power Engineering (12), Hydraulic & Irrigation Engineering (18), Machine Design & Analysis (12), Power system Engineering (18), Production Engineering (12), Structural Engineering (13), Transportation Engineering (13)
  • IGIT Sarang – As commented by Shishir, IGIT’s web site mentions that it offers M.E in Power Systems since 2002. But this is not advertised by BPUT, nor is it in AICTE’s list.

KIIT has approval for 100 Medical (MBBS) and 100 Dentistry (BDS) seats.

Earlier we had mentioned a running headline regarding KIMS (the medical college of KIIT university) getting MCI approval for starting MBBS. But until now there was no proper news report on it. Today Kalinga Times reports that indeed KIIT has received approval from the Ministry of Health and Family Affairs (on recommendations by the MCI and the Dental Council) for 100 Medical (MBBS) and 100 Dentistry (BDS) seats. KIMS now has a new web page.

Apparently Orissa students are doing well in medical entrance exams

In the comments section of our earlier post a claim has been made that Orissa students are doing very well in medical entrance exams. If it is true then it is great news and with the national coaching institute Akash opening a plus two college, it should get better. This year the homegrown (turned national) coaching agency iBOOKs claims in its ads that 219 students from Orissa were selected in the CBSE-PMT out of which 121 were from the iBOOKS institute. Akash in its ad claims that 52 of its Bhubaneswar students qualified in CBSE-PMT. So iBOOKS did better. Akash claims its only its second year. Following are the ads of iBOOKs and Akash with the pictures of their successful students and their CBSE-PMT ranks.

Ranking of Orissa Engineering Colleges based on student preferences

(Update on June 17 2008:  For guidance on what you can get with your Orissa JEE rank in 2008, please see https://www.orissalinks.com/archives/1185 I do not have more information than that.)

During the last two years I ranked various engineering colleges in Orissa based on the student preferences during BPUT’s counselling. In the following I will list the top 10 for 2006 and 2005. However, I must stress that proper rankings can only be done by using several parameters: student preference, opinions of companies, faculty quality, facilities etc. So my ranking based on only one criteria is flawed. But thats all the data that I have handy. So don’t take this ranking as gospel. Please use other channels to get more information on various colleges, such as their web pages.

Balasore and Baripada lobbying for govt. medical colleges

Balasore and Baripada people are earnestly pursuing govt. medical colleges in their areas through various means including district level dharanas and meetings, dharanas in Bhubaneswar, signature campaign and lobbying the government through their MLAs. They are doing it in the right way. A similar approach led them to success in both locations being able to land individual universities (North Orissa University in Baripada and Fakirmohan University in Balsore). Following are excerpts from two articles in the Daily Pioneer.

Careerpoint claims that 21 out of 55 succeeded in IIT JEE

Career point is one of the top coaching centers in Kota. (It is not the top though.) Its advertisement in Samaj today says: “Outstanding performance by CPians. A pre-advertisement from Sri Sri University

Sri Sri University is the latest mega project Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Vidya Mandir Trust has undertaken to translate our beloved Guru Ji’s vision of higher education being global, contemporary, relevant, holistic and empowering. The campus will be situated on a sprawling plateau, measuring 200 acres abutted on one side by a rain fed river and a railway line on the other. Only few kilometers away from Cuttack a traditional city and Bhubaneshwar the capital of Orissa an eastern state of India; the campus will sit in the lap of Mother Nature away from the pollution and distraction of a city yet within the reach of urban facilities.

Chennai Business School forays into Bhubaneswar

New Indian Express reports that the Chennai Business School will open a center in Bhubaneswar. Following are excerpts from that report.

For a background on Chennai Business School one may have a look at the Hindu Business line article of March 2006, which reports its starting in Chennai in 2006 by senior executives who were not happy that the existing business schools in India were using case studies mostly from abroad and were graduating students 70% of which were not employable.

Sri Sri University project: a powerpoint presentation

I received a power point presentation about the proposed Sri Sri University. It provides some details on what the plans about this university are. As per my conversation they planned to start in 2007 but it is getting delayed and they won’t start in 2007. One of the reason for the delay is that the government of Orissa has not yet passed the private university act. I hope they pass it this session of the assembly.

The university is being started by the Art of Living Foundation. Following is some information about it from its web page.

The Art of Living Foundation was inspired by the programs of spiritual leader and humanitarian His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar that began in 1982. It has been a nonprofit 501(c)(3) educational and humanitarian organization in the U.S. since 1989. Accredited as a United Nations Non-Governmental organization in 1996, it is now one of the UN’s largest volunteer-based NGOs. It works in special consultative status with the UN’s Economic and Social Council, participating in a variety of committees and activities relating to health, education, sustainable development, conflict resolution, and disaster relief.

If anyone is interested in helping in the establishment and development of this university, I would be happy to put him/her in touch with the people who are in charge. Please write to me and let me know what kind of help you have in mind.
