(Update on June 17 2008: For guidance on what you can get with your Orissa JEE rank in 2008, please see https://www.orissalinks.com/archives/1185 I do not have more information than that.)
During the last two years I ranked various engineering colleges in Orissa based on the student preferences during BPUT’s counselling. In the following I will list the top 10 for 2006 and 2005. However, I must stress that proper rankings can only be done by using several parameters: student preference, opinions of companies, faculty quality, facilities etc. So my ranking based on only one criteria is flawed. Balasore and Baripada people are earnestly pursuing govt. medical colleges in their areas through various means including district level dharanas and meetings, dharanas in Bhubaneswar, signature campaign and lobbying the government through their MLAs. They are doing it in the right way. A similar approach led them to success in both locations being able to land individual universities (North Orissa University in Baripada and Fakirmohan University in Balsore). Following are excerpts from two articles in the Daily Pioneer.

Career point is one of the top coaching centers in Kota. (It is not the top though.) Its advertisement in Samaj today says: “Outstanding performance by CPians. Sri Sri University is the latest mega project Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Vidya Mandir Trust has undertaken to translate our beloved Guru Ji’s vision of higher education being global, contemporary, relevant, holistic and empowering. The campus will be situated on a sprawling plateau, measuring 200 acres abutted on one side by a rain fed river and a railway line on the other. Only few kilometers away from Cuttack a traditional city and Bhubaneshwar the capital of Orissa an eastern state of India; the campus will sit in the lap of Mother Nature away from the pollution and distraction of a city yet within the reach of urban facilities.

New Indian Express reports that the Chennai Business School will open a center in Bhubaneswar. Following are excerpts from that report.
…
For a background on Chennai Business School one may have a look at the Hindu Business line article of March 2006, which reports its starting in Chennai in 2006 by senior executives who were not happy that the existing business schools in India were using case studies mostly from abroad and were graduating students 70% of which were not employable.

I received a power point presentation about the proposed Sri Sri University. It provides some details on what the plans about this university are. As per my conversation they planned to start in 2007 but it is getting delayed and they won’t start in 2007. One of the reason for the delay is that the government of Orissa has not yet passed the private university act. I hope they pass it this session of the assembly.
The university is being started by the Art of Living Foundation. Following is some information about it from its web page.
The Art of Living Foundation was inspired by the programs of spiritual leader and humanitarian His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar that began in 1982. It has been a nonprofit 501(c)(3) educational and humanitarian organization in the U.S. since 1989. Accredited as a United Nations Non-Governmental organization in 1996, it is now one of the UN’s largest volunteer-based NGOs. It works in special consultative status with the UN’s Economic and Social Council, participating in a variety of committees and activities relating to health, education, sustainable development, conflict resolution, and disaster relief.
If anyone is interested in helping in the establishment and development of this university, I would be happy to put him/her in touch with the people who are in charge. Please write to me and let me know what kind of help you have in mind.

Today’s Statesman has a report on the latest status of the WODC related private medical college in Rourkela. Following is a quote from that article:
In December 2006, the government of Orissa invited Expression of Interest (EoI) from various parties for setting up of the medical college in Rourkela and 14 organisations applied. Subsequently, a high power committee, which met on 15 January this year, shortlisted six applicants.
The shortlisted applicants are BHD Charitable Trust, VELS Institute for Advanced Studies, Chennai, Jasar Dental Medical Education Health Foundation, UP, HI-Tech Hospital Bhubaneswar, BV Charitable Trust Bhubaneswar, PET, Rourkela and Cambridge Trust of India, Ranchi.
The applicants deposited a draft of Rs 1 crore with the government to set up a medical college with 150 seats and a multi specialty hospital with 750 beds. The government of Orissa will provide 25 acres of land and Rs 10 crore to whoever get the offer.
However, it is reported, after the initial scrutiny, that there is no further progress in it. In fact, during the invitation of EoI in November, Mr Sarada Nayak, MLA of Rourkela, had said that very soon, the work would begin as all the bottlenecks have been removed. When contacted, Mr Nayak said: “The case is in the court after the displaced persons’ association moved to court for which we are unable to do anything. But, soon there will be some development in this matter.â€

The Orissa government’s higher education website is here. Following are some of the interesting links at that site:
- The list of government colleges in Orissa
- List of private Colleges by district and by block
- A list of colleges with disciplines they offer
- Another list of colleges
The above lists are incomplete as they are missing some colleges. There are colleges in list 3 and 4 that do not appear in 1 and 2. Well known private colleges such as Christ College and Stewart Science College do not appear in list 2.
The UGC also has lists of colleges and universities in various states. Following are some links.
- List of Colleges in Orissa: page 1 ; page 2; page 3
- List of Universities in Orissa
- List of autonomous colleges (page 2 contains the list for Orissa)

There seems to be a lot of coaching institutions at the plus two science level in the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack area. Below is a list and their ads just after the IIT and AIEEE results were out. They are not doing that well in the IIT front. Lets hope that in the near future some of the top-notch national level coaching institutions (such as FIIT JEE, Bansals) move to Orissa and increase the number of students sent from Orissa to IITs and IISERs. One national level coaching institution that will start this year is Narayana coaching.
