Date of Examination Sunday, May 25, 2008 Sale of Application form begins on March 19, 2008        Last date of sale of application form April 08, 2008 Last date of receipt of completed application form April 10, 2008   The Joint Entrance Examination for the year 2008 – 2009, Orissa shall be held on  Sunday, May 25, 2008 at selected centres  for admission to the first year Degree courses in Engineering/Technology, Architecture, Hotel Management and Catering Technology (HMCT), MBBS/BDS, Pharmacy, MCA, MBA and to the Lateral Entry of State candidates to third semester of degree courses in Engineering/Technology, HMCT and Pharmacy.   ELIGIBILITY   (A) For admission to First Year Bachelor programme in (i) Engineering/Technology : Pass or appearing in 10+2 examination of CHSE, Orissa or equivalent with Physics, Mathematics, and one from Chemistry/ Computer Science/Biology/Biotechnology or pass in 10+3 diploma course in engineering including those having less than 60% marks in aggregate from SCTE&T, Orissa or equivalent. (ii) Architecture:  For admission to Architecture candidates are to secure minimum 50% marks in aggregate in 10+2 Examination of CHSE, Orissa or equivalent, with Mathematics as one of the subject OR 10+3 years diploma with 50 % marks in aggregate OR International baccalaureate Diploma, after 10 years of schooling with not less than 50% marks in aggregate and with mathematics as compulsory subject of examination. All the candidates seeking admission to B.Arch course shall have valid NATA score prescribed by Council of Architecture(minimum 80 out of 200) (iii) Pharmacy : Pass or appearing in 10+2 examination of  CHSE, Orissa or equivalent with Physics and Chemistry and one from Mathematics/Biotechnology/Computer Science /Biology or pass in 10+3 diploma course in Pharmacy including those having less than 60% marks in aggregate from SCTE&T, Orissa or equivalent. (iv) Hotel Management and Catering Technology: Pass or appearing in 10+2 examination in Arts/Commerce/Science from CHSE, Orissa or equivalent. (v) MBBS/BDS : Pass or appearing in 10+2 examination of CHSE, Orissa or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Biology with atleast 50% marks in aggregate in these subjects taken together (40% for SC/ST) with age between 17 and 25 years as on 31.12.2008 (relaxable up to 3 years for SC/ST candidates).   (B) For admission to First Year Masters programme in (i) Computer Application (MCA): Pass or appearing in 2008 three years Bachelor’s Degree examination in any discipline with pass in Mathematics at 10+2 level or in +3 level. (ii) Business Administration (MBA): Pass or appearing in 2008 three years Bachelor’s Degree examination in any discipline from a UGC recognized University. (C) For admission to Second Year Engineering/Technology, Pharmacy and HMCT under Lateral Entry Pass or appearing in 3 years diploma course in Engineering, Pharmacy, and HMCT with a minimum 60% marks in aggregate from SCTE&VT, Orissa or equivalent. (D) For admission to Second Year Engineering/Technology under Lateral Entry Pass or appearing  in 2008, for the  Bachelor’s Degree examination of three years duration in Science from any University of Orissa or equivalent recognised by UGC and have passed with a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate(First Division) with Mathematics at  +3 level. (E) For admission to Second Year Pharmacy under Lateral Entry Pass or appearing  in 2008, for the  Bachelor’s Degree examination of three years duration in Science from any University of Orissa or equivalent recognised by UGC and have passed with a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate (  First Division) with Biology at  +3 level. The ratio of distribution of seats under lateral entry for Diploma : B. Sc. is 80:20.   Note : Candidates are to produce their complete result alongwith original marksheet of qualifying examination at the time of counselling for admission.   RESERVATION The percentage of seats to be reserved for different categories is subject to change and the decision of the State Government as on the date of admission will be applicable. New Central Schools (Kendriya Vidyalayas) in Orissa

In 2007-08 fifty one (serial 95-145 in the list 2000-01 to 2007-08)  new central schools have been created, out of these five are in Orissa. They are in:

• 100 Bouda
• 108 Gajapati
• 125 Malkangiri
• 127 Nabrangpur
• 132 Rayagada

This takes the total number of central schools in Orissa to 34. In addition there is some news that new central schools are also being made in Jajpur and Bhadrakh. They have not made it to the list yet. Assuming this is true, and looking at the district wise list of central schools, the districts in Orissa that do not yet have central schools are:

• Deogarh
• Kandhamala
• Kendrapada
• Nayagarh
• Nuapada
• Sonepur

Looking at the list of central schools in Orissa, it seems that the schools are more geographically distributed than most other states.

2007 ranking of Orissa Engineering colleges that participated in BPUT counseling – solely based on student preferences

Continuing with our methodology, and solely based on the student preferences in the GE (general) category,  we develop a ranking below. Our methodology is we compare when the various branches of the colleges get finished.  For example below when we write CET (8, 8, 12, 12, 16) it means that two of the CET branches were all finished in the GE category by the ranks 800, two by 1200 and one by 1600. We will use the first three numbers unless it becomes necessary to go beyond that.

The colleges that are missing from the above are NIT Rourkela, and KIIT. I consider NIT Rourkela to currently be the best in Orissa. I would slot KIIT around ITER and Silicon.

Outlook for 2008-2009:

Now that ITER’s parent organization Siksha O Anusandhan has become a deemed university, ITER may opt out of Orissa JEE and/or 2008 BPUT counseling.

In 2008 and 2009 there would be several new colleges. Among them three of them, if they get their approvals in time, are going to make a splash because of the people involved in the making of those colleges. They are:

1. Bhubaneswar Institute of Technology: This College will be located at or adjacent to Infocity II. Its founders include three Orissa origin professors in the US (Prof. Rabi Mohapatra, Prof. Laxmi Bhuyan, Prof. Prashant Mohapatra) and high level people in WIPRO (in India) and Microsoft (USA). Watch out for this college. It should leap to the top3-5 in Orissa within a year or two of its starting.
2. Temple City Institute of Technology: This college is being founded by one of the founders of KIIT and a US software professional who also gave some initial funding to KIIT. This college is also supported by at least one North America based professor (not me). Again based on the track record of the founders this should become a good college.
3. Indus College of Engineering:  We discussed this college earlier. This college is being established by a trust led by Dr. Ravi Reddy. Dr. Reddy is a B.Tech from IIT Kharagpur and a Ph.D from University of Houston, USA. He was one of the main person at NIST, Berhampur. Based on this information, I think this will also become a good  engineering college.
4. ASBM institute of Technology: Newsreports mention that ASBM plans to establish an engineering college in 2008. Based on ASBM’s track record this should become a good engineering college too.

NAAC accredition of Orissa colleges and Universities

NAAC, the National Accredition and Assessment Council, an autonomous body established by UGC now does periodic assessment of colleges, universities and even specific programs. We analyze the NAAC ratings of Orissa colleges and universities below.

Fee structure for engineering, MCA, MBA, BDS and Medical announced

Finally the government has announced the fee structure for the various degrees. This has been reported in several places. Following are excerpts from the report in Tathya.in.

• The annual fee for private medical colleges has been proposed at Rs 4.5 lakh.
• For BDS degree announced fee structure is Rs.2.10 lakh per annum.
• The fees per year would range from Rs 32,000 to Rs 58,000 for different engineering colleges.
  • ITER, Bhubaneswar, NIST ,Berhampur, GIE&T,Gunupur and SIT, Bhubaneswar will be charging Rs58,000 per annum.
  • Lowest fee will be charged by PKACE, Bargarh, which is Rs32,000.
• For a MBA degree highest fee Rs. 90,000 will be charged by RCM, Bhubaneswar, RIMS, Rourkela and IPSR, Cuttack.
  • KISD, Bhubaneswar will be charging lowest fee of Rs.40,000 for a management degree.
• In MCA a student has to cough out highest fee of Rs.75,000 in ITER, Bhubaneswar and lowest fee of Rs. 28,000 will be charged by BIET, Bhadrak.
• For a Pharmacy Program the highest fee structure is Rs.45, 000 and lowest is Rs.35,000.

2004 data on Orissa JEE and Orissa engineering colleges: can’t understand it completely

Many of the readers have been asking about what field and what college they can get with their rank. I have maintained that I really do not know the answer. Today while digging around I came across a repository (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) that shows the various students and their ranks that got admitted to various colleges in Orissa in 2004 and only CET data for 2005. So this data is three years old. Nevertheless, it may give some guidance. Note that Since 2004 many new colleges have been made, KIIT has become a deemed university and many colleges have more seats now.

Moreover the data reflects the students in these college months after the counseling. So it is not the data after the first counseling. Normally after the first counseling many students may not join the institute and go to NIT, IIT or some other out of state college.
