2008-09 Rail Budget: New Trains, extensions and frequency increases for trains connecting Orissa

New Trains:
- Bhubaneswar-Sambalpur-Mumbai (twice a week)
Varanasi-Rameshwaram express (weekly)- Puri -Darbhanga express (weekly)
- Paradeep – Bhubaneswar Express (daily – in lieu of one of the passenger trains between Paradeep and Cuttack)
- Keonjhargarh – Puri express (daily)
Gaya-Chennai express (weekly)- New Dibrugarh Town-Yesvantpur Express (Weekly) via Moranhat
Extension:
- 8611/8612 Varanasi-Ranchi to Sambalpur via Rourkela (Bi weekly)
Frequency increase:
- 2891/2892 Baripada-Bhubaneswar Express from tri-weekly to six days a week
- 2421/2422 Bhubaneswar-New Delhi Rajdhani Express from bi-weekly to tri-weekly

The Railway Budget 2008-09 besides being short-sighted and populist, smacks of parochial attitude. As far as Orissa is concerned, it is a big disappointment, but South Orissa and KBK region has received the biggest setback. Absolutely no new trains for the region, no new lines are going to be laid in the region where 4 districts are still not connected by railways. For the people of Berhampur, there is only frustration. The high expectations for Talcher-Gopalpur and Berhampur-Phulabani lines and some new trains to connect North India and few other major towns of Orissa (Rourkela, Baripada etc.) have all gone in the drain. In the last Budget of the total allocations of around 600 crores to Orissa, less than 10% was there for South Orissa (Where there is absolutely no railway connectivity) and this time around it will be even less than that. KBK Rail connectivity has fallen into deaf ears.
