Jammu Tawi-Hatia Express to be extended till Rourkela from November 12
Railway Budget 2011, Rourkela - Biramitrapur, Rourkela- Kansbahal, Sundergarh, Time table and websites November 9th. 2011, 2:27pmUpdate: The updated train timings of this extended train is as follows. It is slower than expected and takes 4 hours between Rourkela and Hatia. But those extra stops, many in Jharkhand, makes it easy for the Jharkhand people to accept this extension. That may be the reason it has these many stops in between.
(Thanks to rourkelacity.com for the pointer to this topic.)
Following is from a report in Telegraph.
… the Jammu Tawi-Hatia Express will be extended till Rourkela from November 12. Hitherto, Rourkela could enjoy the services of only Hatia-Puri Tapaswini Express, Hatia-Bhubaneswar Garib Rath Express and Hatia-Jharsuguda Passenger.
The above report is from the Jharkhand edition of Telegraph. It is nice to hear that they are taking this news positively, unlike many places which complain when a train originating/terminating from their city is extended.
Although this is a slow train with many stops, this will be the first direct connection between a city in Odisha and Jammu Tawi. The major en-route stops of this train are: Muri, Allahabad, Kanpur, Tundla, Aligarh, Delhi, Sonipat, Panipat, Kurukshetra, Ambala, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar and Pathankot Jn. From Ranchi it currently takes 30:25 hrs to Delhi. It takes about 2:30-3 hrs from Rourkela to Ranchi. So from Rourkela it will take about 33 hrs to Delhi. In comparison Utkal Express plus the 08177 Tata-JSG special takes 26:25 + 2:20 = 28:45hrs. So although it is not that good an alternative to travel to Delhi, it provides new connectivity between Rourkela to many other cities such as: Allahabad, Kanpur, Tundla, Aligarh, Sonipat, Panipat, Kurukshetra, Ambala, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Pathankot Jn and Jammu Tawi.
This extension is the result of the efforts of the people of Rourkela. Their movement to provide better connectivity and facilities at Rourkela should be energized by this initial result.
From an initial look, Rourkela has good connectivity to places in the west (Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, etc.) and Kolkata.
With the above mentioned train the connectivity to Delhi will be decent and as mentioned their will be new connectivity to many new cities in the North. (Earlier there was only a biweekly train to/from Varanasi.)
In terms of connectivity to Southern cities the main trains are: the daily Allepey train with stoppages at Vizianagaram, Vizag, Vijaywada, Chennai, Coimbatore, Palghat, and Kochi (Ernakulum); thrice a week to/from Bangalore via Vijaywada and Tirupati; and weekly to Hyderabad. So the connectivity to Bangalore and Hyderabad needs to be improved urgently. Connectivity to/from Hyderabad could be easily improved by extending the biweekly Sambalpur-Nizamabad express to Rourkela. (One needs to check the current rake-sharing arrangements for it.)
The site http://rourkelarail.wetpaint.com/page/DEMANDS lists a bunch of demands from some railfans from Rourkela. It would help if they make a prioritized list of their demands for trains (new, extensions, frequency increases): Top, Top 3, Top 5. Note that diversions and rerouting of trains is extremely rare as the people in the current routes (who will lose that train) will oppose it. So such demands undermine the effort.

Hope to get a new superfast exclusively from Rourkela to New Delhi if not to Jammu. The Orissa govt got a major role to push for the demand. Its a major demand along with rail division at RKL
November 11th, 2011 at 2:59 pm
For additional superfast connectivity to Delhi an easy and inexpensive solution would be to have a slip service that connects to the Garib rath and Rajdhani from Ranchi to New Delhi.

and also keonjhar bbsr fast passenger with 2 new trains will start from bbsr area…but we want rourkela divison at any cost…

On Rourkela division, it is easier to get it if the demand is only to have a Rourkela division within SER. To do that Rourkela people need to urge the CM to to write to SER about it.
However, if strong demand is made to have a Rourkela division as part of ECOR, then that will shake the SER and it will start paying more attention to Rourkela demands; the same way ECOR is now paying more attention to VSKP demands.
November 12th, 2011 at 1:12 pm
Well both ways it will benifit Rourkela but people want under ECOR because of the sheer negligence of SER.But anyways a new superfast express from Rourkela along with the extension of Garib Rath will sort out the issue.Again there are lot of other options like:
SBP-varanasi to Jammu via delhi or to Chandigarh
Gondwana express running till Rourkela(extension) or via Rourkela taking the Ranchi-kanpur route(starting from Raigarh)
Hope to get atleast one new train(superfast) to Delhi from Rourkela via kanpur
November 13th, 2011 at 12:22 am
Unfortunately the demand for either a division at Rourkela or its shifting to ECoR are highly unlikely, and almost impossible to implement.
1. Rourkela area is a high earning region for SER.
2. SER as of now is a very small railway zone.
3. Already there exist 4 divisions within SER, including at Chakradharpur, Ranchi, Kharagpur and Adra.
Thus it would not be a financial viable to have so many small divisions. ECoR, which is much larger by area, manages with 3 divisions.
Similarly, SER would also take a major financial hit, if the area around Rourkela is taken out of it.
Thus the idea should be to demand whatever is necessary and not cry hoarse over the administrative structure.

Chitta Sir @ above
A good step indeed for running a DEMU in the newly constructed Baripada-Bangiriposi stretch considered as a hyper-sensitive LWE area. Nevertheless, there are some instances of non-implementation of new trains/extensions, declared in the earlier rly budgets.
1. Howrah-Berhampur (Now Brahmapur – BAM) tri-weekly express, declared in 2010 budget.
http://pib.nic.in/newsite/erelease.aspx?relid=58155
2. Extension of 18415/18416 Puri-Kendujhar intercity express upto Barbil, declared in 2009 budget (presently it runs upto Banspani).

u cant feel the pain of the localities
division or extending a train is not like making a cup of tea for non capital city especially when capital centric govt is there(for example-bjd)

Actually many people in Odisha and in Rourkela too are unaware of the potential of Rourkela as a division. So any how they need to know it. we have all the relevant documents as well as logic for the creation of Rourkela as a separate division. If we consider all the existing routes of Sundargarh,Keonjhar and Jharsuguda districts, the overall is much more than Ranchi Division. I stay in Bangalore and when the demand for Mangalore Division rises then the whole Karnataka state stands with it. Why this is not happening in Odisha??
November 13th, 2011 at 9:25 pm
Considering the case of extension, I do appreciate this extension, but it will hardly cater to needs of Rourkelites. Instead New Delhi-Ranchi Garib Rath Express shuld have been extended to Rourkela, which would have helped people better. And the demands are pushed by Rourkela Development Steering Committee , a consortium of social organizations and Rourkela Chamber of Commerce and Indsutries, which mostly consists of non-Odias like Bihar Sanskrutik Parishad,Rajasthan Parishad, Gurudwara Committee,Haryana Sangh etc. who have least interest in the needs of Rourkelites or any part of Odisha. Obviously they are concerned in getting trains to their native places instead of thinking about Rourkela Division or getting trains to other parts of Odisha or South India. It should be noted that more than 50% of Rourkelites move to Bangalore,Hyderabad,Pune etc for jobs or searching jobs. Hence steps should be taken in this regard immedietly

@dilip I would be happy to put a guest post from you on the potential of Rourkela as a division.
cheers

If Varanasi and Mughalsarai merely at a distance of 15 kms can become railway divisions both why not Rourkela? But, demand should be only for new Rourkela Division and not on its merger with East Coast as both may not happen. Further, there is a similar sentiment in areas falling under the East Coast Railway. I think extension of the TATA-Howrah Shatabdi express to Rourkela should also be demanded as Orissa has no Shatabdi standard train. Further, as I hail from Berhampur, I think a new train from Vizag to Rourkela via Berhampur and Bhubaneswar should form part of the demand.
November 14th, 2011 at 3:36 am
Not sure whether there is a Shatabdi train already connecting Rourkela with Ranchi and Howrah.
November 14th, 2011 at 6:29 am
Thank you Abhishek.Do you know that the erstwhile Tata-Howrah Shatabdi which is running as Howrah-Barbil Janshatabdi was once operating from Rourkela as Rourkela-Howrah Shatabdi. However due to poor patronage this service was withdrawn. On this route a Janshatabdi can work which will surely ease out the pressure on Ispat Express
November 14th, 2011 at 6:32 am
Abhishek..the Shatabdi express once used to run between Rourkela-HWH.But due to some dirty politics by then Rail minister MR lalu yadav the train was suspended for some time giving reason for maintanence and then it was resumed to Tata and extended to barbil. Now it runs as jan-satabdi express to barbil via tata. The number and schedule remains the same. There is no Satabdi express connecting either ranchi or HWH to RKL as of now.Well thats a good point starting a train to Vizag via Berhampur-BBSR.But as of now we need a superfast on the lines of Garib Rath or rajdhani(as per the schedule and stoppages). The train extended to RKL is appreciated but it takes a hell lot of time to reach Delhi.A new superfast is the call for the moment. The division as we all know is very important to develop railway for a place like RKL.Lets see how the railway budget treats us in the coming budget.I also feel a new intercity to BBSR from RKL starting from BBSR in the morning and the maintaning the schedule of present intercity. The new rajya-rani express can be extended to RKL as its tri-weekly and is running on days when Garib rath is not running. The demand will decide that in future. But we need a train to new delhi via kanpur-allhabad reaching delhi in less then 20 hrs which can be achieved. The SBP-Varanasi can be extended to Delhi as well.
November 14th, 2011 at 9:22 am
today rourkela divison is n every organisation”s demand list, that is not because of the political parties, total credit should go to rdf…u can chek our old post in orkut and rdf,i am happy that we have extended the things upto this level, jisko jo bolna hai bolo…one day rourkela divison will be form and along with vskp it is going to be a part of ecor bbsr

The above was about a different Berhampur in West Bengal.

It has been extended up to Bansapani (Railway station of Joda). Joda to Barbil is 10 kms by road. It remains to be seen when it is extended up to Barbil though.
November 14th, 2011 at 9:11 pm
2 new trains passing through Rourkela as well.Hatia-Pune(bi-weekly superfast) and Kavi Guru express(Santragachi-Porbandar) express. Not sure about the schedule of Kavi Guru express.

The frequency of Hatia-Yesvantpur Express and Tata-Yesvantpur Express needs to be increased. Else go for an exclusive Rourkela-Yesvantpur Express on the same slot. Rourkela-Bangalore City Express on the route of Korba-Yesvantpur Wainganga Express can be tried.
Mining areas like Korba and small towns like Bilaspur have exclusive trains to Bangalore and Chennai, Thanks to Bilaspur division of SECR.Further many industries and mines of Odisha also add the revenue to SECR. These portions should also be handed over to ECoR,in Rourkela Division

Every December the Odisha CM writes to the PM and Railway minister regarding Odisha’s demands for the next railway budget.
What would be Rourkela’s top 3 requests for the next year in priority order in terms of new/extended/more-frequent trains?
When making a request for extension it helps to keep in mind how to make the request beneficial to the state where the train terminates now.
I am less knowledgeable about the needs of Rourkela people, but from whatever I know, I think the following is needed, can be pushed and realistically achieved.
***Odisha and ECOR should offer the extension of the biweekly Sambalpur-Nizamabad Express to Ranchi in exchange for the biweekly Ranchi – NDLS Garib Rath being extended to Rourkela or perhaps even Sambalpur. ***
This will be a win-win for both Ranchi (and Jharkhand) and Rourkela.
Currently there is only a weekly train between Ranchi and Hyderabad and Rourkela and Hyderabad. The extension of Sambalpur-Nizamabad Express to Ranchi would help both Ranchi and Rourkela.
By extending the Garib Rath, besides Rourkela getting a much faster connection to Delhi (only 17-18 hrs instead of 28+ hrs taken by Utkal) a couple of stations in Jharkahnd between Rourkela and Ranchi could get connectivity to Delhi.
Note: To sell any extension of trains to Rourkela that currently terminate at Ranchi one needs to (a) make a point that the Jharkhand population between Rourkela and Ranchi benefit and (b) possibly provide some added benefits to Ranchi.
Note 2: Comparing Rourkela to Ranchi and Tatanagar and saying that they have so many trains and why not Rourkela, may not help, as both Ranchi and Tatanagar have a much bigger population base than Rourkela and Ranchi is a capital city.
November 15th, 2011 at 2:54 pm
My other top 3 request for Rourkela would be a Gunupur-Rourkela express train via Berhampur, Bhubaneswar and Keonjhar. This would bring in a lot of connectivity between various parts of Odisha.
November 15th, 2011 at 3:28 pm
Continuing with the win-win theme ECOR can team up with SER and propose an additional weekly Bhubaneswar Rajdhani via Sambalpur, Rourkela and Ranchi. Ranchi would appreciate having its Rajdhani connectivity frequency increase from 3 times a week to 4 times a week, and it will bring in Rajdhani connectivity to many new places in Odisha, namely, Angul, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda and Rourkela.
November 15th, 2011 at 6:16 pm
Sir,I think the above demands make a lot of sense. However coming to exchange made with Ranchi i have just one concern. We are already providing lot of connectivity from Tata to Delhi(Purushotam, neelachal, sampark kranti, rajdhani) all orissa bound trains passing through Tata.So its time to demand some extension of there trains to Orissa like the Ranchi Garib Rath and Ranchi rajdhani like it was done with Bilaspur Rajdhani(on the cards in 2012 budget i believe). If we want we could divert the rajdhani via rourkela ,keonjhar, ckp and then via ranchi, kanpur. We have already given Jharkhand the Tapaswini,RKL-HWH shatabdi. So its time we ask them to let extend a genuine superfast to delhi from RKL or SBP.The Muri extension was just icing on the cake.We could have pressurised for Ranchi Garib rath as well. But anyways battle is half won.Need to prepare a list before the rail budget for Orissa. The faster completion of talcher-Banspani line will give a lot of connectivity to Rourkela and BBSR(south india, west india and north india)
November 15th, 2011 at 11:32 pm
If population is to be considered, then the population of Bhubaneswar is less than Jamshedpur. However it has got twice the number of express trains that Jamsehdpur has
November 16th, 2011 at 8:11 am
There is no reason to compare Bhubaneswar with Jamshedpur and there is similarly no reason to compare Rourkela with Ranchi or Jamshedpur. (But just to satisfy you: Bhubaneswar area gets benefited for serving the capital area; for being ECOR HQ; for being the HQ of a major tourist circuit of India; and the metropolitan area does have more people than Jamshedpur.)
But if one does compare Rourkela with Ranchi or Jamshedpur one must explain why that comparison makes sense. I.e., what is the point. So what if Ranchi and Jamshedpur have more trains than Rourkela. In what way that makes a case for more trains for Rourkela.
When one wants to make a case for something, if one adds weak or unjustified arguments then that makes the overall case weak. One must learn to make proper and strong arguments.
November 16th, 2011 at 10:21 am
Dear Chitta Sir
I did not mean anything negative,or to hurt your sentiments. There may not be any comparison between Jamshedpur or Bhubaneswar. But there’s a comparison between Jamshedpur and Rourkela and also to some extent Ranchi.
Jamshedpur and Rourkela are two prominent steel cities of India. The former being having the first private sector steel plant while the latter having the first public sector steel plant in the country.
Both have National Institute of Technology (NIT’s)
Both are located in the mineral and industrial rich belt of India i.e. Chotanagpur Plateau also known as “Ruhr of India”
Good cosmopolitan population due to presence of mega steel plants
Both are listed in Top 20 cleanest cities of India
Jamshedpur-7th Rourkela Industrial Township-14th
Both are under South Eastern Railway right now
ISO certified townships are located at both cities
Hence we can expect rather demand the same amenities for both cities
I apologize for my above post
November 16th, 2011 at 1:28 pm
Hi Sudesh: I am not hurt. I am just trying to help to make the best case for Rourkela. In case of Railways number of people using a station is a good comparison measure. But I am not sure where to get that number from; so in its absence people use the population numbers.
In terms of getting more trains to/from/through Rourkela one good way is to push for a top 3 list every year to make to the CM’s list and continue to make the various demands in various forums as is being done by various Rourkela groups. That pressure helps.
November 16th, 2011 at 2:05 pm
Well if we see the list that Dilip provided in his link one can figure out the number of trains plying to West india from Kolkata. Now compare this with other parts. The graph goes gradually down whne it comes to north east. The indian way of planning and implementing vastly political. There are projects which are economically not feasible but still being worked out.And there are projects where one can get max benifit but it still on papers. So coming to the point whenever we demand any damn thing may be its railways..airport or xyz we are just given assurance. Now in the past all those trains started from RKL were either extended or cancelled.Take the case of Shatabdi exp(HWH-RKL) which is now running as Badbil-Tata-HWH jan shatabdi. Why we cant resume that train to its old path. How many stations or trains in indian railways have faced that kind of situation where a complete train is taken off the route. When BSP Rajdhani was extended they protested from the very first day.And see they got there train back.We need something like that to happen at RKL but it can only happen when govt officials sitting at BBSR take a note and take this seriously.Isnt this an insult to Orissa or its just RKL ?
November 16th, 2011 at 2:09 pm
The present movement in Rourkela has been very good and has given its first result. I hope it energizes the people to continue pursuing their demands.
November 16th, 2011 at 3:21 pm
Sir,we need to have more support from state govt.Especially our CM should take this personally. What Jamshedpur is today its not because due to Tata but also due to the Jharkhand govt as well. Its not just getting the railway facilites at RKL but other things as well fro eg- BPUT,ESIC,airport and the railway division. All of them are feasible and helpful to the people. Its no govt preference, its the people preference.RKL can go beyond Jamshedpur we all know that.
November 16th, 2011 at 10:57 pm
Rail traffic to be hit on 21st and 22nd due to repairs
http://greater-rourkela.blogspot.com/2011/11/repair-works-on-howrah-mumbai-mainline.html
Since most of the trains would be diverted on Ranchi route,we can seek alternatives like doubling of Rourkela-Hatia route,Construction of Bansapani-Bimalagarh route, or connecting Gua/Bolanikhadan with Kiriburu
November 17th, 2011 at 3:03 am
Let’s not compare Jamshedpur with Bhubaneswar at all. Even though Jamshedpur urban area is more populous than Bhubaneswar, but the demographics are vastly different. Bhubaneswar is largely a city of govt servants, white collar employees in corporate offices, IT companies etc and a large number of students, and the population that provides the requisite services to these people. While Jamshedpur is an industrial town, majority of which are blue collared employees that is factory workers of the many Tata factories and all the supporting industries which go along with them. Thus even though the population may be higher in Jamshedpur, the actual average income would be lower.
Basically Bhubaneswar is a city of the service sector, while Jamshedpur of the industry sector.
Similarly Jamshedpur and Rourkela can also not be compared at all. Rourkela is miles behind Jamshedpur area in terms of industry. Remember Jamshedpur may have been founded for Tata Steel, but there are a lot of other industries.Tata Steel’s Jamshedpur plant itself is much larger than RSP. Tata Motors operates one of the world’s largest truck making factories that churn out 15,000 trucks a month. Also Tata Tinplate, Lafarge Cement, Tata Power, Telcon, TTL, etc etc are present in Jamshedpur.
But what really makes Jamshedpur leagues ahead of Rourkela is the Adityapur Industrial area which houses more than a thousand small and medium scale enterprises, making it one of the largest industrial areas in Asia.
As for Rourkela’s improved connectivity, before more and more trains can be introduced to the town, it needs to better connected in the first place. We need better railway lines between Sambalpur and Koraput as well as Sambalpur and Cuttack, both of which are slow and low capacity single track non-electric affairs. Similarly the connection to Ranch too is not too good either. Also in these areas freight traffic being very high it is always difficult to add passenger trains as tracks are already close to capacity. Before number of trains increase, track capacity has to increase.

@S. Pani
I just want to know, whether u r interested in the development of Rourkela or any other part of the state. If yes, then please have a positive attitude, if no then please don’t waste your time here.
Since you have not lived in Rourkela at any point of time and the information you have collected is from internet, u lack the basic knowledge about the ground reality here. I have stayed at Ranchi and Jamshedpur and may these cities have developed more than Rourkela, then that doesn’t means that Rourkela could not develop anymore.Be positive and refrain from any comments that will hurt anyone’s sentiments. Many places in India which were far behind Rourkela have developed a lot, that is due to the will power of the people, good governance and strong voice in the Parliament. The issue is that people like Hemananda Biswal or Mangala Kishan have no voice at all in the Parliament. While the former doesn’t speaks out the later demands the trains which will satisfy his boss
November 18th, 2011 at 12:33 am
i think for rourkela division under ecor, all the people of sundergarh, jharsuguda and kendujhar dist should be aware of the need of a railway division. only the support from the people of rourkela is not enough for it. as jharsuguda and kendujhar dist are also going to be a part of it their support is also much needed. the organization which is supporting the cause should initiate to extend the demand to jharsuguda and kundujhar.
November 18th, 2011 at 1:33 am
for connectivity to south we should demand a super-fast express from rourkela to bangalore via sbp, titlagarh, vskp, chennai like sanghamitra express from patna to bangalore.
present dhanbad-allepy exp is taking too much time. though it is a long distance express train its running like passenger.
though distance from sambalpur to chennai and bbsr to chennai is nearly same but the time difference is much more.
from to distance(km) time train
bbsr chennai 1223 21:30 hwh-chennai mail
sambalpur chennai 1287 29:05 tata-allepy
and at present from sbp to ypr
from to distance time train
sambalpur yesvantpur 1587 29:20 tata-yesvantpur
and at present from rkl to ypr and chennai
from to distance time
rkl bangalore 1737 31:55
rkl chennai 1437 32:00
so if a new superfast train from rourkela to bangalore via chennai is proposed and if it run with the approx same speed and stoppage like hwh-chennai mail then less time will be consumed for travel.
from to distance(km) approx time
rkl sbp 151 02:30
sbp chennai 1287 22:30
chennai bangalore 362 06:00
total 1800 31:00
if we get a train like this then much larger population of our area will get benefited and it will connect two south metropolis.
a large number of student and working professional of this area are in bangalore and chennai.
November 18th, 2011 at 1:41 am
i agree with chitta sir that sbp-nanded should be extented to rourkela/ranchi. and ranchi ndls garibrath should be extented to sambalpur.
November 18th, 2011 at 2:35 am
@ranjan
That report gives you the fastest growing by population, not exactly the best criteria out there to judge the growth of a city. But if you actually see the CAGR of both Bhubaneswar and Rourkela, both these towns have a CAGR between the last two decades which would put them in that list.
Also, you have to keep in mind that Orissa as a whole is a low population growth state, having below average population growth comparing other states of India.
Then, at least in the case of Bhubaneswar, the census gives us only the data for population of BMC area, which in my view is a gross under estimation of Bhubaneswar population. High real estate costs in the past decades have kept people from shifting to the core city. The people who are effectively part of the city is much larger. You can see that from the fact that BDA has close to 500 villages under its purview. I beleive Rourkela also has a similar situation, though not as much as Bhubaneswar.
Anyway, all this comparing doesnt really serve much purpose.
November 18th, 2011 at 1:23 pm
@Sudesh Mohapatra
I am interested in the development of India as a whole, not just Orissa and not just Rourkela.
Also, my point in comparing the towns is that realities of each town are different. It is not correct to say that just because they have it, so you should have it too. Demands should be formed based on your own needs and not an attitude of one-upmanship among towns.
Also, I have not compared past situations, I have compared present. I havent said that Rourkela could not have in past and will not in future develop anymore. I am sure with the right attitudes of all involved, Rourkela too will develop. I have visited Rourkela many times, and have many friends living there. I have many friends living in Jamshedpur too, and have spent almost a year in Jamshedpur as well, and Bhubaneswar is my home town. Also I do quite a lot of diligent research about facts and figures before saying anything.
You say that “ground realities” of Rourkela are different, but dont provide specifics as to how they are different.
A request to all, not to get carried away by emotion

i have also done several researches and what I post here is the result of that research. In one of your earlier posts u were somewhat negative about Rourkela Division. You have the notion that SER may b hit ECoR may not gain. If you have doubts over that then please check this online petition
http://www.petitionodisha.in/transportation/creating-a-new-east-coast-railway-division-at-rourkela/
There are logical facts and figures. People are demanding and are campaigning for this division since last year.
And you must be aware that there are many railway zones like SER,SCR,WR which have more than 4 divisions. SCR has about 6 or 7 divisions.
The people in Coastal Andhra are demanding a new zone at Visakhapatnam and since there is a congress ruled government in the state,it is likely to be sanctioned very soon. If such thing happens in the present scenario, then Waltair will also take the profit making districts of Rayagada and Koraput under its jurisdiction. Only two divisions will be left and the Centre will play its dirty game, it will dissolve ECoR and merge it with SER again, citing the reason that a zone cannot exist with two divisions. Then what SER will have 6 divisions and full exploitation of Odisha will commence.
SER is the only railway zone in the country which has not provided any divisional headquarters in the states it operates, despite of the fact that it has got more than 600 kms. of railway route in Odisha

@Sudesh The last paragraph could be made to a very strong argument in favor of an SER division in Odisha. Can you substantiate that with exact numbers. In http://kbkrail.orissalinks.com/ I had calculated it to be 589 kms. But I forget where I got it from. Note that the petition link you gave does not work.

Dear Sir
I have calculated the total distance to be 589 kms. However in the recent times, some new routes have been constructed in Keonjhar district, which will further add to this.
The total calculation is as follows
Jaraikela-Jharsuguda-131 kms
Rourkela-Biramitrapur- 27 kms
Bondamunda-Barsuan- 68 kms.
Bimalagarh-Tupadih- 30 kms
Barbil-Bolanikhadan- 6 kms.
Padapahar-Jaroli- 37 kms
Bahalda-Badampahar- 47 kms
Aumlajhor-Gurumahisani- 13 kms
Bondamunda-Nugaon- 35 kms.
Jaleswar-Bhadrak- 108 kms.
Rupsa-Bangiriposi- 89
Overall- 589 kms
Ranchi Division when constituted was less than 400 kms, however it is now 443 kms and is approaching rapidly to achieve 500 route kms , target in the coming years

1. The size of both SCR and WR are much much larger than SER, which happens to be one of the smaller though dense zones. Thus let me reiterate, dont give arguments like they have it so we should too.
2. As for a new division at Vizag, very very difficult again logistically. If at all SCR gets split, it is highly unlikely that Waltair Divsion gets moved to this new zone. Such a zone would be too unwieldy, spanning almost a 1000kms along the coast, not to mention the interior parts in Odisha and Chattisgarh. The new zone, if at all, would be after the splitting of SCR into two parts, with a new HQ at Vijayawada which is far more central to the zone. ECoR’s dependence on Waltair division is too high for it to be moved to another zone, even in part. Remember VSKP loco shed houses more than two thirds of locomotive strength of ECoR. If this shed is taken away from ECoR, it will be left with barely a 100 electric locomotives at the new Angul shed and no diesel locomotives at all.
Also there is zero chance of dissolution of ECoR zone, as way too much investment has been made into making a new zonal HQ here. You cant throw away thousands of crores of investment down the drain. Not to mention any mention of dissolution of the zone would lose the Congress and BJP a lot of political capital, both of whom are trying hard to gain a toe-hold in state politics.
Forget the chance of any zonal/divisional dissolution, which is always political and economic harakiri.
3. Please check your research. SER consists of 4 divisions, two in West Bengal and two in Jharkhand, ie Kharagpur, Adra, Ranchi and Chakradharpur.
As for the tracks that are in Orissa, please see the map a bit as well. A large part of these tracks are branch lines joining the HWH-Mumbai main line, and not contigous stretches. Also about 200kms is with KGP division as part of the HWH-MAS mainline upto Bhadrak and the branch line to Bangriposi.
I request you to come up with any map or description of which lines would be part of this new division at Rourkela. Also, please remember, to keep the division at at least 500kms of route kms, all continous, and also remember that you cannot politically abolish any existing divisions. Consult with all you can. I ask you, because I personally dont see any reasonable way in which a new division can be carved out for Rourkela. If such a map exists please point me in that direction. If you have such a map please mail it to me at “julupani@gmail.com”.
Rorkela’s needs are that of more trains, connectivity and amenities. Though a division would make it easy to voice and implement those demands, unfortunately present circumstances make that not a very viable proposition. It’s needs would need to be fulfilled, but without the creation of a division at Rourkela.

@ Dillip Thanks. Can you double check the total route kms of SER. Some time back, I had calculated/found it to be 2577 kms but am not sure the site from where I found it.
If it is still 2587 kms, and out of that there are 589 kms in Odisha, we have a very strong case to ask for an SER division in Odisha. The SER division in Odisha need not have all its routes in Odisha.
